       Social media feeds amplify stuff that’s “engaging” (i.e. controversial, polarizing).On Roundabout, our new local community app, we’re experimenting with “Highlights”, a feature where trusted stewards curate relevant posts for the community.        Most online social spaces have either a single feed (Facebook, Nextdoor) or topic-based channels (Discord, Slack)We’re testing an approach that offers the best of both: when someone creates a post, automated tools suggest relevant channels where it makes the most sense.

       @wearenew_public a public LIFO social media feed, hashtags for interests and managed private groups.I hope you're helping onboard people for the first two while providing the last one designed around physical locality. I assume your users will also heavily dominate the posts using hashtags for towns and neighborhoods.

       @wjmaggos not exactly, but close! We don't want these feeds to be super public, so messages intended for neighbors can't reach viral escape velocity and end up ricocheting around the internet. However, we are exploring diff options for interoperability between spaces!

       @wearenew_publicyou seem to be trying to provide a better FB/Nextdoor and that's awesome, but imo that's half of the corporate social problem. networking, not media.my exp is people post on those platforms in ways that should be on social media. not talking about school boards but Gaza etc. I want them on social media, specifically fedi. I don't see them ever managing two accounts or separating their convos.and local servers would let fedi grow while staying decentralized.end rant.
