"... when people talk about autism they talk as if it were a gradient, not a spectrum at all."#CLLynch, 2019https://neuroclastic.com/its-a-spectrum-doesnt-mean-what-you-think/I've been uncomfortable with the way people talk about the autistic s spectrum for ages, but couldn't put my finger on why. This one sentence absolutely nails it.#HatTip to @dedicto for referencing the article in their bio.#ActuallyAutistic #AutisticSpectrum

@strypey @dedicto We should probably drop the whole 'spectrum' analogy at some point. I propose to call it a vector (which is a group of numbers which can represent something on a multidimentional plane)

@strypey @dedicto Hey ! Thanks for the share. I am still confused. Here, autism is considered first as a disability of different kind. If they affect several domains, it is called autism. Otherwise it is a different neuroatypie. At the same time, autism is from foetus life to death. Something which does not change. But before autistic burnout, the difficulties were largely invisibly even to me and it just caused a lot of anxiety. It seems contradictory to me.

@strypey @dedicto > "... when people talk about autism they talk as if it were a gradient, not a spectrum at all."I've mischaracterized in spite of knowing this to some degree. Gotta do better.

"There is no question that those who suffer from severe neuromotor difficulties are extremely disabled, and I am not in any way comparing myself to them.In fact, I am specifically asking people to stop comparing me to them. It does them a disservice to assume that they have what I have, only worse."#CLLynch, 2019https://neuroclastic.com/its-a-spectrum-doesnt-mean-what-you-think/(2/2)
