Remember the pothole of doom, that was such doom because it was just off a section of road that flooded at the drop of a hat? Remember how they had road works signs there for weeks last summer without doing anything, then took them away without fixing the PhoD but with a new patch of concrete running across the road in just the way it might after a drain had been put in? Since then, there has been no flooding after even heavy rain, for which hurrah! I’ve even stopped slowing down to peer suspiciously at it in the dark on wet days. Which is why I drove into about six inches of water while doing thirty+ this evening. Thankfully I now know the route well enough to stay on the road even when it’s hidden, and so did not hit the PhoD. Coming home it was only about four inches high, so presumably the new drain just got overwhelmed temporarily. Nonetheless, I shall return to last winter’s regime of checking it.

@Flick complicated. Shouldn't it be a bright colour if it can't be repaired?

@FeartnTired A helpful local had put a traffic cone in it, and one next to it to show the height difference, and then later a helpful sign emerged saying “DANGER BIG HOLES”. When they cleared away the roadworks signs, they took those as well.

@Flick Eeek! Few years ago when himself was in the landy with bloke in his hobby band, going to a gig, they had a scare. Mad tourist came roaring down the road and forced them onto the verge, only the verge was really a very deep and water filled pot hole, or more a length than a hole. The car had also thrown up a load of water off the road too, nutcase speeding in such conditions. Apparently there was scads of water flying up over the windscreen and the bloody vehicle was rocking about the edge, he thinks had it been a car rather than the landy they would have gone over the edge.

@FeartnTired Not really, love! The best thing — if they can’t be arsed to fix it — would be to put the cones back. I assume that everyone assumed the new drain would fix it so it was all ok.

@Flick The state of the road is a bloody disgrace. So is the carpark in town next to train station, my God, you could easily break a leg trying to negotiate it, there are ruts and pot holes you could lose a cow down.

@Flick I was implying that you should charm a strapping young lad and do what's best left unsaid (or your council might come after us both)

@ligma_male Oh, I see! I am slightly surprised no local farmer has just filled it in, I must admit. It’s miles from where I live, or I might be (eg) muttering about it on the village WhatsApp group. I assume everyone (local and council) assumed that the drain had fixed the flooding issue so the hole was no longer a danger. I certainly did, and I’ve been along there with no bother in some very wet weather recently.

@Flick a mixture of gravel and sand would also be an acceptable substitute in case whoever's doing it doesn't feel confident with handling Portland

@Flick @FeartnTired They DO say some people have had success with spray paint and anatomically recognisable scribbles around or on potholes. You know. Some other people. Elsewhere. Absolutely nothing to do with you or me.Or the Epic Pothole.

@Flick @FeartnTired Mind you, with the epic size of that particular pothole, some hypothetical person could do a truly epic sized anatomically recognisable scribble.

@Gnomeshatecheese @Flick I'd really rather they didn't. by all means make it visible with colourful construct, but can it not be something pleasant to look at or irritating in a less disgusting, and trite, manner?

@FeartnTired @Flick The point is, that it seems those particular scribbles get the quickest reaction from the relevant authorities, as in the pothole suddenly gets fixed. I doubt a pretty butterfly would have the same effect.

@FeartnTired @Flick That would require considerable skill to be sufficiently recognisable to be effective, and it still might well be ignored.
