       One thing I have to finish: https://x0.at/aYW2.png what i've never found is someone generating a low-color palette (95,99,256,760) thats statistically optimal for lowest-error real-world photos.With a slightly tweaked converter with ($ecret) + error-diffusion dithering we can have a general-purpose 'hi-color' fixed palette for 8-bit indexed-color (8-bit CLUT) displays.Ultrima256-Farming-Compare.webp

And thanks to @Zergling_man who showed me some images from a more recent game, "Spirit Island", which excellently validates the success of my methods and dataset.Ultrima256-SpiritIsland-Compare.webp

While the pics are still up on the image hosters, some folks might enjoy seeing some tests. A LLM managed to find for me some prior-art in general purpose 256 color palette.http://kim.oyhus.no/Palette256.htmlI wont comment here on the relative suitability of his approach to mine but it is great to see prior work on the problem. If anyone ever cares about this issue in the dystopian future it will be my approach vs Oyhus's: the epic cage match to the end of time.

@clort This reminds me of what Hueforge does with 3D printing. They have to minimize colors because every new color dramatically slows print times. It's proprietary software, so if you've come up with an alternative I'm sure lots of open-source enthusiasts would be happy about it.
