Monday I went for a hike inna woods and encountered a very large coyote who wasn't intimidated by me at all. He even came trotting towards me, to about 30 yards. Then he dove off the trail into the brush. I didn't even have a stick, just a 2" pocket knife in the bottom of my day pack. I'm doing the same hike today but will take my Laplander knife just in case of reindeer or other aggressive wildlife. @ConfederateHobo

@lord_nougat @ConfederateHobo OK no hostile animals today, just some coyote poop on the trail and some nice deer.

@lord_nougat @ConfederateHobo Got some sensible advice from a family member, carry bear spray rather than a pole arm (e.g. a halberd) or pistol.

Or better still, bear spray AND a pistol!

@pinemarten @lord_nougat Bear spray is great to have. It's a deterrent for the curious. Not the determined. If an animal is just checking you out, it'll keep them away. It will not however stop something you've spooked or made to feel threatened.
