"When we eventually push our old devices aside when the battery weakens, when the screen cracks, or when advertisements convince us that an upgrade is overdue ... Globally, the world now produces 62 million tonnes of electronic waste every year. By 2030, that number will rise to 82 million tonnes. This mountain of discarded electronics is one of the world’s fastest-growing waste problems, but it remains one of the least discussed."https://www.themorning.lk/articles/V4yyiiPYbbXGiXwzsChM

@gerrymcgovern What I see there are a bunch of cathode ray tube monitors and a few chassis. The chassis can be re-used as is, shame someone didn't see fit to donate them to a recycler like Re-PC instead of dumping them, the cathode ray tubes, glass can normally be re-used but the glass in CRTs is heavily leaded which makes them less re-usable but also makes them dangerous to discard in a landfill. The lead can be extracted with high-temperature melting (pyrometallurgy) with reducing agents or lower-energy mechanochemical processes that use grinding followed by chemical leaching with acids or alkaline solutions and then the remaining glass free of lead could be re-used, this I think is the most environmentally sound way of handling this waste.

@gerrymcgovern ask not what your device can do for you, ask what you can do for "the economy"This shit makes me wild with rage. It's just fucking text, some pictures, and sometimes video, and the rest of it is surveillance assholery I don't want. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/23/how-device-hoarding-by-americans-is-costing-economy.html

@celeduc @gerrymcgovern Rage against #deviceHoarding Actually it's sounds like extinction behaviour, a very specific capability of #monoSapiens, comes together with #FOD, fear of deflation... el resto paga mastercard ..

@jesuisatire @celeduc @gerrymcgovern I don't know what "it's" is referring to, land filling all these devices are repurposing and recycling them?

@gerrymcgovern And it's annoying AF to boot, I don't even want to buy a new phone or a new computer or a new anything really, but our economy demands, that we throw it stuff that's still working. Without security updates it's unfortunately not feasible to keep using our gadgets.

@MaryMarasKittenBakery @gerrymcgovern I still have a 2005 Dell Dual core Athlon operational with Ubuntu 24.04 and a 6.17.7 kernel, just because commercial garbage like WhenDoze doesn't work with your old hardware does not mean there aren't functional alternatives.

@hamishb @MaryMarasKittenBakery @gerrymcgovern I don't think they have an incentive I think both board teenagers and people looking for value they can steel or extort is a constant source.
