Got a *lot* of stuff in the pipeline over on #Hackster today, so I'll get a head-start on today's round-up thread with the four that have been published so far - starting with (as I mentioned earlier) the news that the #RaspberryPi SBC range is getting a price hike across the board, balanced out with the introduction of a 1GB model at the $45 entry point. You can thank the #AI bubble for this.https://www.hackster.io/news/memory-pricing-leads-to-a-5-25-price-hike-for-the-raspberry-pi-5-single-board-computer-family-26f2aee18ce5#Technology #News #SingleBoardComputer

Also #RaspberryPi-related, this new Raspberry Pi Recovery Kit Nano luggable design from Jay Doscher - the smallest in the family yet, and a stepping stone to a planned Recovery Kit Ultra,https://www.hackster.io/news/jay-doscher-shrinks-the-raspberry-pi-recovery-kit-launches-the-recovery-kit-nano-a31f664c8653#Technology #3DPrinting #SingleBoardComputer #News #Hackster

Eric Nam's back with a tool to stream inertial measurement unit data over Wi-Fi on an ESP32-S3, then process it for neat visualisations - which play back in real time, but only from a recording not as-it-captures.https://www.hackster.io/news/eric-nam-s-latest-tool-wirelessly-captures-bosch-bno055-imu-data-for-playback-and-visualization-0c56b1351847#Sensors #Technology #IMU #Python #Microcontroller #News #Hackster

And finally, for now, a look at a live Q&A session the #Arduino team did alongside representatives from #Qualcomm, #STMicro, and #EdgeImpulse - mostly about the new Arduino UNO Q and the App Lab, but naturally fielding a *lot* of questions about the new terms and conditions and whether Arduino's moving away from its open source ethos (again.)https://www.hackster.io/news/arduino-hosts-q-a-on-the-arduino-uno-q-once-again-states-its-100-commitment-to-open-source-ethos-b99d96c3f08d#News #Technology #Microcontroller #DevelopmentBoard #Embedded #Hackster

@ghalfacree I admit up front I did not watch the hour long video to see if they address the IDE, which to me is the thing that has made Arduino what it (was, is). Boards come and go. Thrye not individually important, the openness of course matters. But if they get to control the IDE (integrated development environment; the standalone program used to program boards), then this change is probably just enshittification -- lock in to corporate control. They've already lost as far as I can tell, with the switch from Java to the Electron system. This was very controversial a few years back and was probably a large reason why Arduino corp is essentially irrelevant now.

Had some more stuff go live on #Hackster - only one left in the to-publish queue now - so, time to continue today's thread. Next up we've got the Blackpants, which turn a Blackhat Board add-on originally designed for the Flipper Zero into a standalone handheld Linux terminal (albeit one with modest specifications.)https://www.hackster.io/news/ryan-walker-s-blackpants-turn-the-flipper-blackhat-board-into-a-standalone-linux-terminal-158ffdb26c9b#Technology #Linux #Handheld #Cyberdeck #Electronics #OpenHardware #News

Then some great work from @psychotimmy: you can now emulate a Sharp MZ-700 (as well as the earlier MZ-80) on your #RaspberryPi Pico, Pico 2, or other RP2040/RP2350-based microcontroller board - colour at last!https://www.hackster.io/news/tim-holyoake-turns-your-raspberry-pi-pico-pico-2-into-a-classic-sharp-mz-700-microcomputer-114ad090de1e#Technology #Microcontroller #Emulator #VintageComputing #RetroComputing #News #Hackster

Speaking of retro-themed vintage computing stuff, Tynemouth Software's released a bit-bashed serial card built with just four 74-series logic chips. Hardware-compatible with the @rc2014 family, but currently the only software is for Tynemouth's own Jupiter Ace-inspired Minstrel 4th.https://www.hackster.io/news/tynemouth-software-unveils-the-four-chip-bit-bashed-software-serial-card-for-the-minstrel-4th-c02bf6ce47c7#Technology #VintageComputing #RetroComputing #News #Hackster

This, meanwhile, is a bit more modern (albeit only just - Cortex-A7s aren't exactly cutting-edge!): the Linux Platform Kit, an #OpenHardware phone-like touchscreen gadget for your #Linux needs on-the-move.https://www.hackster.io/news/the-handheld-linux-platform-kit-is-capable-of-practically-anything-its-creators-promise-56db695f04ec#Technology #SingleBoardComputer #Handheld #Makers #News #Hackster

And lastly, at least until my final piece of the day gets burped out of the queue and onto the site, a 3D-printable compact mini-ITX PC case which runs its hardware "exceptionally cool" - despite relying on the PSU and CPU fans alone.Oh, and it's stackable, too - and there's an optional full-colour front-facing status display screen with live graphs!https://www.hackster.io/news/dimitrios-kallivroussis-stackable-3d-printable-mini-itx-pc-case-runs-exceptionally-cool-0f06f96af76e#Technology #3DPrinting #Computing #News #Hackster

And, as always, all that's also available on the #GeminiProtocol - now with a new site layout which puts this month's stuff front-and-centre and moves previous articles down to an "Archives" section at the bottom.(I still need to look into how to make it a valid "gemlog" so people can be notified of new articles - but that's a job for a less busy day!)gemini://tilde.club/~ghalfacree

And big thanks to @rqm for revealing the scary, complex, highly-technical secret behind #GeminiProtocol "gemlogs": you.... err, prefix the link text with a date in YYYY-MM-DD format. That's it, that's all you do.Which means you can now subscribe to my Gemini capsule to get notified when new articles go live!gemini://tilde.club/~ghalfacree

@tomjenningsI have to admit, as an Arduino user since, I think, the Duemilanove, I prefer the Arduino IDE 2.0 over the 1.x version. I think a lot of the user base, though, moved to PlatformIO and later VS Code/Codium - certainly the more experienced ones, anyway.

@ghalfacree Most of the complainers, including me, were devastated by the loss of the separate debug window. I design most of my projects to have a (semi) interactive console/debugger/log in that debug window, and removing it made 2.x utterly unusable. Most of what I do are "headless" embedded controllers, no human interface beyond buttons and feedback and sensors etc. That debug window is crucial. Also they were essentially dishonest in the how and why; it wasn't a 2..0 upgrade, it was a sidegrade to Electron. I, at least, never saw any mention of that. So Electron can't do it, and that's that. Then 2.x was buggy as hell for over a year, certainly no inducement to use it. I tried at least three times, which was a PITA because 2 "did something" to library organization where 1 was far more tolerant. Can 2 accept all the other-manufacturer library URLs etc like 1 can? TO support other processors, library sources, etc. I never bothered to find out. They didn't seem to care what users thought.I'll use 1.8x until I cant, then switch back to a more traditional make system.

@ghalfacree @tomjennings But that's the problem. Arduino is huge in K-12 and college intro courses; if (when) Qualcomm breaks the IDE's licensing, those students and teachers won't have good choices.

@kbob EXACTLY. They're probably thinking they'll extract $ from schools. For me, and anyone I talk to, there's no going back; Arduino has been dead/moribund for some time.@ghalfacree

@ghalfacree Good on the external support. The serial monitor was an entirely separate floating detached window, not enclosed in the Arduino app frame. It was definitely removed in 2; if they put it back in that would be great.
