Every time I see a short post in Portuguese I fall into a pit of despair that I have forgotten everything I knew (which was not much) about how to read Spanish and learned nothing. Then I give up and put it in the translator and feel very silly.

@futurebird I’ve kept some roman language skills from learning Latin in school. That’s often good enough to read street signs across Europe! I wonder how it was in Rome!?

@futurebird The first time I landed at the JFK I spoke… Spanish 🤣 The customer officer was chatting (in Spanish) with a lady of the cleaning service, so it wasn't a problem for me to use the same language, while speaking in French with the guy behind me in the queue.Probably someone will have thought I'm involved with UN 😄

@futurebird Portuguese and Spanish are so very different. I speak Spanish: I am not be able to understand anything in that language. Don’t feel bad.

@futurebird I second the previous comments. I’m a Portuguese-speaking Brazilian and Spanish is my third language; even though it’s asymmetric (in general Portuguese speakers understand better Spanish, than the other way around), there are important differences. Don’t feel bad for not being able to make use of one to understand the other… 😅

@futurebird I get that. Really. Translators are tech magic.Star Trek meets Hitchhiker’s Guide impressively tech and as addictive as crack. But (rally-cry-note-to-self-mostly) That tech translator has too much monopoly power. Bully for your brain! Muddle on with learning!Never give up your mind! /rally

@futurebird Sometimes when someone from Brazil listens to someone from Portugal or vice-versa without realizing where they're from, it can have this strange effect where you mostly understand what the other person is saying, while not realizing yet which language are they speaking
