Postmortem: power issues caused damage to the disk. I fixed it and NAS is back.Nerd postmortem: I pulled and ddrescue'd the disk, ~20MB of unrecoverable data. Hope it wasn't important, haven't looked into what precisely was lost it but postgres isn't complaining (yet), and as long as db data wasn't lost I don't really care. YOLO copied the image to a new disk, adjusted the partition table, fsck'd, NAS is back. This took longer than rolling a backup but had the least amount of total data loss.

@eriner a bit scary to think that a power outage could take down a postresql DB. Definitely not using this moment as a self-reminder to check backups. Congrats on being back so fast!

@eriner good to see you got everything back. With ZFS or other modern file system writes are check pointed vs. buffered so the state of storage should have been stable. As for life of the SSD/NVMe. Your milage may vary. I have one that is way past its warranty and according to the diagnostics it still has 80% life in it.

@TeaTootler @eriner lost a Kingston ssd like that.... I'm not a fan of ssds anymore for storage... they are great for operations but not reliable for storage IMHO.

@RonV42 ZFS isn’t optimal for flash storage, and I don’t make any use of the filesystem CoW features (which I would have to disable for the DB files anyway).

@chrisprt @eriner Also a good reason why I have UPS's all over the house. I'd rather damage a UPS (which is DESIGNED for power outages that might spike the line anyway) than a piece of equipment.

@Dan_Ramos @chrisprt I have UPS’, but they don’t always kick on if the voltage drops but doesn’t go out completely. I have multiple brands and models and none of them handle utility voltage drop adequately.

@kaas_peeland @eriner yes. High availability for databases is tricky. Ideally I’d have two NVMes in RAID 10 in each box, and 3 boxes for a high availability cluster. But I haven’t taken the time to experiment with switching to cockroachdb.

@eriner get Crystaldiskinfo - I use this at work for my SSDs. I have about 60+ WD Blue 500Gb SSD all go bad within days. Just stopped working. I use this app to scan my drives to get expected time to backup and replace. It's free and can run on thumb drive

@CSB @eriner failures happen even to good hardware. I suspect that the load of NAS exceeds the write endurance of a consumer grade drive. Enterprise write intensive drives would be more appropriate but are also made of unobtanium.

@eriner an idee to do a remote backup. and when nas go bad a remote server could spin up from latest backup? what disk size, cpu, ram bandwidth. needs the server?
