Do any of you have interesting ceilings? Have you painted the ceiling in a room with a cool color or pattern? Our flat has curved walls: such a cool architectural detail but you don't really notice it. I think painting the ceiling a contrasting color would make the curve stand out against the white walls. Black: like a night sky. But could look cheap goth if done poorly.Light Teal: Cute, it's like the sky. Could be TOO cute.Muted Red: Chartreuse: ?? #interiorDesigns #interiorDesign

@futurebird The ceilings here are boring and normal (aside from the almost comically fancy ceiling fan in the living room), but when I was a teenager we had cool carvings around the borders of the ceilings. Painted boring white, but showed in the light and against the coloured walls.

@futurebird I like that idea a lot!I'm going to drop this into the compost heap of the plan where it can ferment with the rest: You could also not paint it one block of color... instead maybe do a geometrical pattern, or give it "animal print" but in the color of your choice, or even two colors in an organic looking pattern or a strict organized pattern?

@futurebird I painted the ceiling in our bedroom dark blue/navy and the idea was to add stars (using a proper map of the night sky for here) with glow in the dark paint. I've been living in this apartment for 8 years now and have never added the stars. But the spider webs are very visible against the dark blue

@futurebird just do a tiny margin at the edge of the ceiling. Make it "pop" without affecting the overall quality of the light in the room.

@futurebird I think the universal white ceilings are because they brighten a room. A dark color might give a dungeon atmosphere. You could go yellow for a morning all the time feel.

@fritzoids I don't think I have the skill to paint anything complex that is that large. Maybe get one of those wall papers of space from the 90s? We had a wall in our house that was a view of the earth from the surface of the moon (my dad thought it was funny since I was a "space cadet") but I love that wall. Problem: wall paper can be a little shiny, not ideal for a ceiling. I think ceilings need to be matte? Maybe?

@jhavok Our ceiling is fairly high ... so I don't worry about making it feel bigger. The black worries me because black paint can look messy if not done just right.

@bubblewrap Did it make the room feel smaller or larger?Did you use a matte or semigloss? How do you like it after some years. We do not kill spiders in this house so it's good to know they liked it.

@futurebird one place, some time ago, painted the ceiling a light blue with white and pearled faux/sponge areas for a cloudy effect. A gradation from the white walls to a pearled or other color might make the curve stand out

@futurebird I really would advise against black. From time to time I browse houses (because I can't afford to buy one) and sometimes see black walls or ceilings. Always depressing, imho. Wallpaper is probably difficult with curved walls, probably, but maybe you can look for an artist to do it? Some artists make the most beautiful wall art. Or do the night sky, but through smaller painted windows?

@futurebird @fritzoids so, 2 totally unrelated bits of information: 1. you can get custom wallpaper printed to the finish of your choice, 2. NASA has an amazing image library of hi-rez space pics - star fields, nebulas, ... . no reason to mention this really

@kritischelezer Hmmm I wonder if white walls would mitigate that? But I do think black makes spaces more "cozy" or "dungeon like"Now chartreuse... it would "match" with some of the other things we have going on. And I think it would look great around the tall skylight hole in the kitchen. Good observation.

@futurebird I used a matte paint. I guess it makes the room feel a bit smaller (at the very least not bigger) but not oppressively small just not BIG.I still like it, my only concern is if we ever move out, the landlord probably wants it back to white and that will probably take a few coats of white paint. Besides that I kick myself regularly for never adding the stars that would be so cool, but it is also a whole project™

@sknob Ok, Shakespeare. (every time I see white walls with beams like this that's all I can think of.)Is that natural to the building or did you add it?

@futurebird natural to the building. Old house, probably late 18th century, in a medieval village in the south of France :)

@futurebird Not black! It becomes claustrophobic.A complimentary colour to that of your walls could work well.

@futurebird For a while I had a wooden hatch in my kitchen ceiling that led up to a space where the hot water boiler lives. The hatch was just a square of plywood you lifted up out of what looked like a window frame. The ceiling was just the usual boring white, but I painted the hatch itself sky blue, so it looked sort of like you were looking up at the sky through a skylights. It's been replaced now, by a smoke proof and fire resistant metal one, so I'm safer, but I miss it my "skylight."

@futurebirdOriginal from 1910. Now that we own the place, I might restore it properly.

@rlcw I adore this and I kind of love how it's worn away too. But that worn look might not go with the rest of what you have going on.

@futurebird In our bedroom we painted the walls black and left the ceiling white which is a nice contrast. In the living room we have a bunch of intricate plaster work designs which are probably original to the building (~1890) but we need to find someone who can restore them since parts of the pattern are missing

@futurebirdWe've lived here for over 10 years now, so it's fine as it is. I've just always also had an eye on bringing it back to life. Might also go for just restoring a part of it, so you have a flow of time kind of situation.

@futurebird In an old house we installed a patterned tin ceiling in a small cove off the dining room, & instead of white we chose a dark metallic gold (not bright Trump gold!). In a limited area, lined w books, it is very cozy "library" with subtle light reflection.

@futurebird @fritzoids growing up we had wallpaper on a wall that was a bit fuzzy, nice to touch. I am sure it wasn’t glossy. So look for different textures.

@futurebird I'd go for a very very dark blue instead of straight black. Then paint marker dot the night sky of a favored time and place. Borrow/buy a projector and load up stellarium to get the pattern reference, then it's not hard, just takes some time.

@futurebird Just be aware that a dark/saturated ceiling color will ‘visually’ make your ceiling appear lower (and a whiter/brighter color will opposite. It does not take that much of a variation between wall and ceiling to delineate the two - maybe a light grey ceiling or vice versa. You are correct to keep ceiling matte.
