"Yesterday, the software that powers Pebble watches was around 95% open source. As of today, it’s now 100%. This means that if Core Devices were to disappear into a black hole, you have all the source code you need to build, run and improve the software behind your Pebble.""We’ve also published electrical and mechanical design files for Pebble 2 Duo. Yes, you can download the schematic (includes KiCad project files) ..."https://ericmigi.com/blog/pebble-watch-software-is-now-100percent-open-source/#OpenHardware #SmartWatch #Pebble #OpenSource

@strypey Sounds nice, but then: "some binary blobs and other non-free software components are used today in PebbleOS and the Pebble mobile app" which doesn’t go along well with the "100% free" claim imho

@wolfram_roesler> doesn’t go along well with the "100% free" claimFair cop. But see my comment here;https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/@strypey/115618249446728669I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for now. Not rushing out to buy a Pebble watch yet (PineTime might still be a better choice for now). It really seems like they're trying to open up a product that was acquired and enshittified out from under them. Will watch with interest ...

@strypey Right. Never attribute to malice what can be attributed to ignorance … however, given past experience, perhaps we should rather never attribute to naivety what can be attributed to cunning? We will see what they come up with.

(1/2)@wolfram_roesler> given past experience, perhaps we should rather never attribute to naivety what can be attributed to cunning? The enshittification of Goggle was an object lesson in that. But it's important not to overcorrect and become cynical. Leading to harassment of people working hard to build social enterprises around ethical tech (eg the kicking Purism got from certain 'perfection yesterday' purists).

(2/2)Fair criticism, based on carefully gathered evidence and delivered respectfully, sure. This is how we support each other to stay on the path. Your post mentioning the binary blobs, for example was useful and perfectly fair criticism.
