wow, look at this deep wisdom I learn about myself and others in my field from simon promptfondling willison, about how I simply *must* be loving prompts if I work in softwareimagine having the fucking gall to write this shit as though you represent the entire fucking field

@froztbyte@mastodon.social I spent exactly one (1) post deconstructing a silly thing Simon Willison said about LLMs in Dec 2023. This one. Since then he seems to have only gotten worse as an AI booster. It's like watching someone lean into a gambling addiction.

before some odious replies come along, let me outline a few thingsI *start* at hating this shit because of the theftbecause I can *see* how little regard they have for others’ IP and ownership (run a few websites - you’ll see how the scrapers act)that already tells you *everything* you need to know about the people behind these services (no, they are not tools)then next I hate them for their impact. environmental. social. infosystem.all poisoned, now, today.then for the future.

I stare in borderline dread at the next 15~20 yearsnot simply because of all the fucking fascists and their bullshit (which these lying machines are overtly part of), but also because of the impact i see these things makeI see these utterly unviable companies trying their fucking hardest to grab land share as quick as possible, to make people *reliant* on them. to *displace*. and I know they know only one business model: rentware.

if they could get away with it, they’d commercialise your every interaction and thought experienceso many things today already have, but it is as nothing to where these fuckers would want to take this stuffso there’s all that, and then in a couple of years from now, *we* get to do toxic waste cleanup in the world they’ve ruinedfuck that. fuck them. resist this shit now. don’t cede a fucking inch. feed them iocaine, burn their money. bring them ruin.

@abucci @froztbyte Same reason reporters cozy up to silicon valley execs and terrible political leaders: access and perks. Sadly, b/c of that and his reach, he's kind of actually, for real, dangerous. Then again, Karpathy this week said "software is ephemeral" so we may be past the point of no return for a sizable % of coders.

@hrbrmstr@mastodon.social @froztbyte@mastodon.social The fact that the super realistic flight simulator is not in fact flying through the air dawns on people pretty quickly. It takes longer for some people to realize the thought simulator isn't actually thinking, because we've been told in a myriad ways that thought isn't real the way gravity is real. It can be fun to suspend disbelief in both cases, but reality, the that which cannot be ignored, comes crashing back eventually.Sorry about the hackneyed metaphors I'm in a mood.

@hrbrmstr @abucci given that karpathy's the _root_ of the term "vibe coding" (and thus could be argued to be responsible for kicking off this entire substrain of bullshit), that doesn't really surprise me muchcf: https://awful.systems/post/3436005/6122830

@froztbyte@mastodon.social @hrbrmstr@mastodon.social Why would anyone take seriously statements like this coming from a co-founder of OpenAI and who worked on AI at Tesla? Clearly he has a vested financial interest in people believing these sorts of things. "I have a bridge in Arizona to sell you" etc.
