I liked "y'all" a lot better before it became some kind of a liberal/left signaling thing.

@MLE_online I'm a bit torn by it. Like many, I used to use "guys" but that's problematically gendered. Y'all is a low word, which I like. It's a southern word, which I don't like. Do you have a proposal? I'm open. I tried 'mammals' but that didn't catch on.

I get that it's an attempt to be inclusive, and that's nice, but people who now say y'all when they didn't grow up saying it put such emphasis on it and say it in such an affected way. Drives me nuts.

This is being prompted at the moment by me sitting through a work meeting where the guy presenting keeps saying "awesome awesome y'aaaall" and he's not a native y'all sayer

I used say y'all, which i think i got from my mom, who has redneck tendencies. Now I can't say it without sounding annoying.

@MLE_online But folks should know when to use all y'all. Oh, I guess I've been using folks for some time now even though it makes me feel like Don Knott's when I type it.

@tomjennings I have a few thoughts. First, I don't think you guys is problematically gendered. I think it's just that some people are always looking for something to be mad about. I hear women refer to their women friends as you guys and no one cares. I just think you guys is much more clunky than y'all. Low words are good. I think it's bad to be against things just because they're southern. There are lots of good, decent people in the south. Plus, it's commonly used by black people, so it's not just a white southern thing. I'm just going to keep saying you guys until the day comes that yall loses its lefty cachet, and then i'll go back to saying it

@davefischer Yeah but 'guy' is def gendered male, and deigns to include women (sic) into the power group. It seems inclusive to us ... guys.My preference is mammal -- hey all you mammals! -- so as to include all legged breathing beasts who understand what's going on. Often, dogs. Often, not all humans.@MLE_online

@tomjennings Guy is, but "you guys" is a part of speech that is used in a gender neutral way. This is similar to the ongoing debate about dude. I hear women say dude to their female friends all the time. But some people want to be mad about it.

I find it really funny that they don't seem to have any 'cultural appropriation' issues with it, too.

@VE2UWY it's okay to say it if it's a natural part of your speech, but lots of people say it in the cultural signaling kind of way

@fredy Not me. I'm a total damn yankee. Now, my yankee is rooted in maine and massachusetts concepts of yankee with 19th C poverty roots, frugality and all that shit. Not the "yankee go home" kind of yankee.@MLE_online

@stepheneb hahaha that's really interesting! So, are men over-self-correcting here? That's not terrible I suppose, lol. Fascinating. If you did that on FacePunch, would you get the same results? I bet not. (I assume you'd be banned for oppressing someone.)@MLE_online

@tomjennings @MLE_online Basically Iâm not going to use the phrase âYou guysâ to reference a group that doesnât ask as men because to me the reference is gendered.I also recognize that many folks use term and hear the term donât think of it as gendered. If I was all hot and sweaty working hard with a group and we took a long break to rest and cool off and folks were feeling lazy and complaining about getting started again I might say âhey assholesâ.

@fredy When I lived there, people who had so much as visited outside the town they lived in were considered traitors.I have a brother who brags that he has not driven over the Bourne Bridge in 20 years (last I talked to him). I am not joking. Many decades ago, many, my grandmother was complaining to my father (her son) about so and so who did some thing.. she went on and on and on and Frank finally says "who are you talking about" and tl;dr it was someone who had died before 1900. Again, I am not joking. THese are places to get THE FUCK OUT OF!@MLE_online

@tomjennings @fredy @MLE_online I enjoyed my time in 02062, mostly, but didn't regret leaving after 5 years. As a coworker once said of his spouse's home state, âthey either know you or they don't like youâ.
