@mitchconner Spinning drives aren’t really good for that either, I’ve heard of instances where they won’t spin up or other problems

it's generally more stable because the magnetic bit shouldn't change too quickly. even if the bearing is mulched the data is present and salvageable in theory.having the ability to take a nuked drive and pull at least some files off it has made me a few dollars over the years

tbh optical disc will probably degrade quicker than an HDD although tape spools are p goodbut this is all theoretical i am one well used hard drive failure away from catastrophic data loss at any given time
