Podcasting 2.0 sucks.The whole point of me subscribing to a podcast is so I can listen to the damn thing OFFLINE.If the show goes away when I no longer have access to the network, the whole enterprise is worthless to me.Looks like it's back to Syncthing and bash scripts...

@justinericksonI'm on my third Podcasting 2.0 Android client and — inconsistently — they simply do not download the latest episodes.Current app is 'Podverse'. It's been given permission to run in the background. I check to make sure episodes are downloaded before I leave the house (it has the little icon that indicates it has been downloaded).Episodes stop fucking playing when I get into cellular dead zones.The app UI won't render on opening if it can't talk to the network.Sucks...

@justinericksonYeah, I got that.I have cellular dead spots on the way to work and the app stops playing (which means it's not playing locally, or it refuses to play without being able to talk to the network which is equally shitty).

@FortyTwo I have to admit I have some buggy issues but not that one and the ones I have I blame more on the is not liking other apps being the default podcast player. I find if it is isn’t google, Apple, or Spotify, the os doesn’t play nice.

@FortyTwo @justinerickson I will admit I went back to overcast because Marco just plain made an excellent player. There were a couple great PC2.0 apps but they just couldn’t fix the bugs in the long run.

@FortyTwo I think I had a similar issue one time. Airplane mode is fine but if it goes in and out of internet access then it stops playing even though it’s downloaded… that seems familiar. I use Podverse too and that might be where I experienced that. But I also use Playapod because it seems to be a little more stable.

@pepsi_manI wrote a little bash script years ago that checks HTTP headers for modified ETAG and missing that it downloads the RSS feed and size diff's them and downloads the latest N episodes.Add it to cron to run once a day and then Syncthing the download directory to my phone.As long as curl and syncthing doesn't go away, it'll work for as long as I want it to...@justinerickson

@FortyTwo @justinerickson Ohhh that is a difference. i dont have it set to auto-download new episodes, i like to pick and choose, so im not sure how AntennaPod would do auto downloading. i know it has the option to do it. i also know both AntennaPod and Podcast Addict respond to mastadon posts. any problems they are fairly fast to respond.

RSS still works. I use feedbro and I don’t have to sign up or subscribe for anything. Some stuff you might have to fiddle with it to get the rss, but it’s relatively easy to find out how to do it with a quick online search.
