No ads.No* algorithm. No influence campaigns. No AI.No bots.Just people on the internet talking to each other about all the little pointless things, (and big incredible things) in our lives. *I realize that the demonization of the term "algorithm" in social media is unfortunate in many ways. The demonization of the words "social media" itself is also missing the point. But this is about a simple take on what I think a lot of people are looking for right now.

@futurebird Years ago, teaching "Internet" (and in general computers), I explained the algorithms as a sequence of instructions. The usual example was "wake up and go to school/work".Oddly, the most of the students forget to dress :blobfacepalm:

@futurebird I shall use this opportunity to introduce people to some rad blogging methods and platforms:Neocities - open source, free (with paid options)Bearblog - proprietary, free (with paid option), minimal with a simplistic discovery page and communityMicro.blog - proprietary, paid (as low as 1$ a month), has its' own community, timeline and fediverse integrationNekoweb - open source (based on VScode), free (with paid 3$/month option), similar to neocitiesGET BLOGGIN Y'ALL

@futurebird That's why I try to always say "no recommendation algorithm" instead of "no algorithm"

@gbargoud Recommendation algorithms could be good and helpful in some cases. I use one I made to help me find posts from people who don't post often and thus their posts get buried here. A simple:show me one (1) post from each person I follow from the last month is very powerful for finding out what people who are less active are posting. You know those people who only post like once a week... but then it's always some amazing photo they took or an incredible insight on some event.

@Tomhodson @gbargoud I run a python program that is very inefficient on my laptop. It gives a list of links that I have to click on. The program goes to each person's page and finds the URL of their first post that isn't pinned. It times out before doing my whole friends list. I don't really know what I'm doing. Maybe this summer I will try to make it better. But... I also keep hoping someone with more skill than me will make a slick version if I keep talking about how great it is.

@futurebird Nice I think a recommendation algorithm is similar to home automation in that pretty much all of my complaints about it go away when mine is deterministic and under my control

@gbargoud We have really messed up on home automation. The possibilities were limitless. But all I have are light bulbs that spy on me.

@futurebird Home assistant is fantastic. I replaced all of my light switches with zigbee ones (zigbee is a local mesh technology for home automation) which connect to my home assistant box.I then bought some ESP32 chips when I found that someone had already done the hard work of writing the forward to control my model of AC with them and a bunch of sensors from Ikea and now if my toddler opens her bedroom door when ours is closed it will turn our bedroom lights on at full brightness

@futurebird Algorithms are critiqued because of intent perceived behind their usage as in we have become the product, or the objects being manipulated often by the billionaire behind the mega-corp.

@futurebird On the algorithm, I actually would really like the ability to curate and sort posts based on quickly rising, accounts I boost/like/reply to more often, stuff like that. Especially if it's just a ranking algorithm, it doesn't collect any additional information that you don't already give to Mastodon, and we're committed not to sell ads already, I'm not sure what the hatred for anything other than reverse chronological order is on here

@futurebird @Tomhodson That does sound like a fantastic tool and I might use your idea the next time I'm looking for a personal software project.I have wanted a pluggable recommendation algorithm page (basically you provide a config file for how you want it to work and can tweak that as desired) for a while now.

@futurebird @tchambers Algorithm is nothing more than a sequence of instructions. It's WHICH instruction, the matter which should (or shouldn't) alert someone. If algorithm is used for the good, why not? And social media is demonized because most commercial social media are guided by biased, polarized, ads-driven algorithms. And, well, algorithm is even the name of sequences used in the Rubik's cube.R U R' U' for example is an algorithm, called "sexy move", meaning: turn the right side 90 degrees clockwise, then turn the up side 90 degrees clockwise. Then, turn the right side 90 degrees counterclockwise, turn the up side of the cube 90 degrees counterclockwise. Right, Up, Right-prime (reverse movement) up-prime (reverse movement). Nothing more than a sequence... An algorithm. In fact I'm learning the cube and making fun of this facts. I've stopped using algorithms for one thing, and use them for another. #social #RubiksCube

@futurebird my unneeded toughts on the matter:No ads - unless i want to see them. Like new game releases on steam. No* algorithm - well, depends on the platform. How to do SOME curation on really mass media site like youtube? No tracking - yes, don't need thatNo influence campaigns - yes, but what counts? People shoutin "Use linux!" Is that a campaign? No AI - yeah, butlerian jihad now please! No face scanning - yes, that shit is not needed. No bots - same as AI, when is bot an AI?

@futurebird i think the bad attitudes towards algorithms is basically the same as towards AI. There are good and beneficial uses of certain kinds of AI that have nothing to do with generative LLMs, but because media and everyone else is just calling everything AI, it's easier to just say you're anti-AILikewise, algorithms can be good and useful, but because people's main exposure to the concept is manipulative social media algos they can't control, it's easier to just say you're anti-algorithm

@futurebird The problem with social media is that it peaked at Livejournal. On LJ you could make posts as long as you wanted, not just emotion-tugging soundbytes. You could control your cuts and warnings, layout your writing around your images however you pleased. Most importantly, you could control which groups of people saw what and who would show up in your feed. The power to say, I only want A, B and C to be able to read this, though I like A-Z was great. Then capitalism happened.

@futurebirdThere is a reason why I capitalize "The Algorithm" when it means the specific kind of manipulation of communications people so often mean by it. It's very specific.
