This new kind of "search correction" is like some kind of horrible forced normie filter for life. You must mean whatever is more popular. And not "did you mean?" either... just not even bothering to show you the results for what you wanted to search for in the first place. It's really insulting.

This is an example of what the search correction was hiding from me:https://www.etsy.com/listing/1102303353/garnet-buoy-ant-1-surfing-ant?It's a sculpture of a **surfing ant** with a garnet for her abdomen. I deserve to see this. LMAO. Who else should see this exactly?I wonder if this "feature" is helping sales much? Seems like it's making the best thing etsy can offer, you know, stuff you can't find anywhere else, harder to find.

@futurebird I frequently talk about this as search abandoning the concept of delivering what the user wants in favor of trying to mold the user to want what it's willing to give. I wish I believed this was incompetence rather than a malicious attempt to reshape people into more docile and lucrative consumers/subjects, but at this point I really think big tech has undeniably shown they are out to control, not serve, the public

@funkula It gives me the same sad feeling I get when I hear people talking about how much they "depend" on an LLM. But... it's just sanding all of the difference out of everything. Doesn't that make you sad too? Doesn't it feel gross to get any sense of validation from such a source? One woman said she didn't want to bother real people with all her insecure questions. It's just sad all around.

@funkula Sometimes I feel very confident that the possible social and economic impact of AI is being overblown because so much of it is like a toy whose novelty wears off. I remember that people talked to the chat bot ELIZA for many hours before growing bored with it and seeing the limitations. But, I do wonder if I'm just wrong. Maybe there are a lot of people who will want to use LLMs a lot and they will never stop. And it will slowly start to shape our world.

@funkula I don't think any serious person really believes in the AGI fairy-tale anymore. "The machine will learn to improve itself and become god like!"But there is a softer version of LLMs growing to dominate our world. If a significant portion of the population decides to treat these systems like their best friend and confidant all of those people become very easy to manipulate. And this is exactly how the people creating these systems expect to cash in. Forget traditional advertising.

@funkula I have recently been feeling very self-conscious and dissatisfied with the interior design of my apartment. I've posted about it a lot recently and by interacting with people on this website I've decided that I don't need to throw everything away and buy new items, I can elevate my space through organization and repairs. Where might I be if I talked to an LLM instead? I suspect I'd be thinking more about spending money. And couldn't a company pay to make that more likely to happen?

@funkula Our political opinions, our purchasing decision, even our emotional well being are shaped by interactions with other people. Everyone rubs off on you a little. You are who you choose to talk to. Who do you become if you talk to an LLM most of all? Whoever they want you to be I suppose. And it seems likely that the LLMs are already design to at least keep people using the product. So the first brainwashing is "I'm the best one to talk to" then "Only I can really understand you."

@funkula I *could* be convinced that I "need" to spend 10k on a bathroom renovation. But the people in my life: my family, my friends, their needs and values but also the people I choose to interact with online can make that rather large decision go the other way. If I wanted to sell things to people and didn't have morals I'd want them ONLY talking to my LLMs and those LLMs would work on the assumption that buying my product was normal and essential. Why doesn't this scare people more?

@funkula I think a lot of people will swear up and down that no advertisement, no online content or social media could ever have a large impact on their real decisions or values. Because to admit this is possible is to admit vulnerability. The same kind of vulnerability that might make someone say "I don't want to bother anyone with my boring concerns, I will just ask the LLM"Please for the love of god: bother us.

@futurebirdI wish you were right. Sadly, I believe that enabling people to become lazy and to get away with it is a winning strategy. It's useless to point out how awfully misleading and wrong LLM output is, or what psychological and societal effects it has. Once you start arguing along this line, you'll get a "Nothing is perfect"-flavored reply, in return. End of discussion. The only way to stop this digital microplastics from is to not accept it, to fight it.@funkula

@promovicz I mean. "we are already being manipulated" is already true. One of the reasons I started thinking about renovation is due to all of the interior design videos and magazines enjoy. And these all have an undercurrent of "renovate and spend" because ... well, consider who makes them. But that was easier for me to compartmentalize than a conversation. If everyone on here was posting about their renovation it WOULD make me wonder "why can't I do that too?" and "should I do that?"

@promovicz This copycat, monkey see, monkey do, instinct is very real and strong in all people. It's part of how our minds work. I also think there is an aspect of modern (American?) individualism that says that if you can be influenced in that way you are weak willed and terrible. This is very silly. Of course what you see other people doing has a direct impact on what you do. No man is a rock.

@tankgrrl @funkula But there aren't people still using Eliza now in any great numbers. And didn't Eliza "power users" grow tired of it eventually? Will those charmed by LLMs eventually grow tired and see the limitations?I want to say yes. But I don't really know.

@futurebird @funkula Ok the topic of organization:My apartment comes with basement storage (5 apartment brownstone so the basement is divided in 5 zones and each unit gets one)Something I did recently which has undeniably made my life better was measure the shelves in my apartment and basement, find a box that would fit well on those shelves and buy 40 of that box.Now moving things around is super easy and a bunch of previously unusable shelf space opened up

@futurebird @funkula Personally, I’m not too scared because it’s not sustainable. LLM providers are losing money hand over fist. They need to dramatically increase pricing to break even, and their costs don’t go down with more volume of users. It only survives as either a luxury product OR it manages to replace human labor, in which case the economy disintegrates.

@gbargoud @funkula Our coop has basement storage units. But there is a waiting list to get to rent one. I have been on the waiting list for 16 years. Any day now!(Getting the right general storage box is more important that people think. I am considering a closet unit as a possible solution. But I have a lot of thinking to do about how that will work.)

@futurebird marketing: an industry that believes they get to decide what you are looking for, and then, in an act of towering dishonesty and monumental hypocrisy, blames you for buying it.

@futurebird @funkula At least a couple of our closets/cabinets are L shaped and so some stuff is completely inaccessible unless we use boxes that can be pulled out of the leg of the L

@futurebird This reminds me of gender - because a lot of it is learned by mimicry. Cis gender is - more or less - the culture of rejecting that idea.

@promovicz I would think that being cis gender would be *not* rejecting the way the world suggests that you play along? I'm confused.

@futurebird For me it's not about "rejecting" society's rules, but about "accepting" feminine ideas from women and my girlfriends. From my perspective, it's cis people who reject "normality" because of quasi-religious ideas about gender.

@futurebird And all the translations, how I hate them. I could search better for stuff because I know four languages besides English. Not anymore! I search for something in German *specifically to find such a thing in Germany* but noooo, your first 300 results are in 'Mericuh cuz fuck your European linguistic arrogance.

@futurebird There's a distribution across internally sourced, externally sourced, and inherent self-esteem.We're seeing is the end-state of advertising; advertising exists to create or increase an insecurity, so you'll spend money to fix it. (The _idea_ of advertising, never mind any particular implementation, is malicious.) And if you want to collect rent from advertising, you have to create people who can't function without continuous exchange trading lifespan for reassurance.@funkula

@futurebird Yeah, search correction as standard suggestion is fine as many people will make a typo, but search engines not respecting the order to search strictly for the exact word you put in quotes is infuriating.

@futurebird @funkula If you want organization tips for bathrooms, use containers to keep things upright and make use of vertical space in drawers. It looks tidy, and you can fit a lot more in a drawer. I think one of the things that frustrate people about bathrooms is all of the clutter. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. I initially organized with tampon boxes, but slowly replaced those with fancier containers, like old jars, useless Tupperware, and take-away soup containers 🤣

@futurebird I absolutely *hate* it when auto-incorrect "fixes" something I wrote over and over. Take the effing hint, you damn machine! If I backspace and undo even once, that should be enough!

@futurebird @funkula@goblin.camp it's maddening knowing how things work and not being able to explain how without people feeling insulted. like ffs be insulted at how you're being manipulated by grifters, not because i know something you don't and i'm trying to resolve the difference by bringing you up to parity.
