It was popular career advice for the last generation or so, to advise kids “do what you love”. It’s well-meaning, but the older I get the less I think it's good advice. It sets people up to seek happiness and fulfillment primarily in their careers, which for many, may not set you up for success *or* happiness.I lean toward "do what you are good at" that can pay the bills, and then seek happiness and fulfillment outside of work, where you are more likely to find it.

I think the advice came out of the Gen X aversion to "selling out" which was among the biggest crimes of our generation, but isn't really something subsequent generations care about.

If you are younger and want a primer on the Gen X sentiment toward selling out, I recommend the classic Gen X movie Reality Bites.
