@madargon Good to see that you're trying out GNU/Linux.The GNU OS was developed since 1984 to allow the users to have freedom while using a computer - and of course Linux came along much later and demanded that they be credited for everything, despite how Linux goes against the very reason for the existence of the system by containing proprietary software. The consequence of demanding credit for everything is massive confusion - people go around referring to GNU as "Linux", Linux as "Linux kernel" and Android as "not Linux" (as Android has Linux, but it by default lacks GNU).Too bad that download was full of proprietary software, which Mint advertises as a feature, rather than a flaw.My personal recommendation is to first try Trisquel GNU/GNU Linux-libre - as it is free software and then to try a proprietary distro if the hardware is defective.Trisquel works great on even the latest intel with integrated graphics with a wired NIC (the main problems are with low-quality Wi-Fi cards which do not operate without a proprietary program that contains malware loaded up).

@elite @madargon Unfortunately, seeding object code without also seeding the source code, without a written offer may constitute GPLv2-infringement (copyright infringement) and a defect of the GPLv2 is that on any infringement, the license permanently terminates forever. The GPLv3-or-later does fix that mistake and will fix any discovered future mistake (as long as that's required to download it, you can see as much object code as you like), but for some reason Linus decrees that Linux must be GPLv2-only (and only gives exceptions to proprietary software - it's okay if such doesn't meet the requirements of the GPLv2).Linux remaining GPLv2, but being GPLv2-or-later could fix that problem, but Linus says no.

@Suiseiseki I did it for someone not tech-savvy who had Mint/MATE for several years and I didn't want to make more confusion. It turned out even slighty newer version has some differences in UI (thing non-tech people immediately notice).
