It just hit me: The Mandalorian is Disney's Lone Wolf and Cub.

@phaedral took you a minute, huh?Pascal carrying a lost child along a hostile vastness is a genre unto itself, lately.

@faraiwe Yeah, somehow Mando never grabbed me, and it was only in thinking about how Pascal is not to blame for the shitty #FantasticFour script, and how my sweetheart bristled when I suggested Pascal was hired for FF because of his other role as a babysitter, in the middle of such musing I remembered Lone Wolf and Cub.Brains are such silly things.

@phaedral in fairness, Pascal is a good actor, a decent human being, and the Mandalorian was (s1 and 2, at least) one of the best post-Disney offshoots of Star Wars. It's perfect Space Chanbara, which is the essence of Star Wars. Now, let me steer you to the Seven Samurai... ;)

@phaedral "Battle Beyond The Stars"(I like Rashomon best, not reeeeaaaally Chanbara, but that is me... sufficiently pressed, Yojimbo)

@faraiwe You clearly have a greater command of the various genres. My experience with Japanese culture is largely framed by reading Shogun im the first few weeks of tenth grade in 1979.

@phaedral Footnote.Whenever I notice someone I know starting to take Star Wars *too* seriously, I direct them to various Chanbara movies. If they are here, I plop them on my sofa, crank the surround and slap a disc or stream some good stuff. Yojimbo. Lady Snowblood. Zatoichi. etc etc.I don't say why. It's fun to watch the lightbulb go on, as they go "oh, it's like..." "Star Wars? Yeah. That's The Source. it's juuuuust Space Chanbara, bub".#StarWars #Chanbara

@faraiwe > "oh, it's like..." "Star Wars? Yeah. That's The Source. it's juuuuust Space Chanbara, bub"This is still news to people? Hasn't Lucas openly discussed the fact that samurai movies were among his inspirations? As were WW2 movies, particularly stuff about the French resistance. As were various westerns, 1940s-50s sci fi novels, etc.Every piece of culture has influences. But SW isn't just samurai in space, any more than Dirty Dozen is just Seven Samurai in the wild west.@phaedral
