So, this weekend I plan to clean under the stove. I've bought some tile glue and a replacement tile in anticipation of the floor being so bad it needs to be replaced in that area. I'm ready. However: Can I ask a question please? How exactly is one supposed to keep the area under the stove and fridge clean? You know, in the ideal world? Are we meant to move it every month? Why are there so many designs that are not sealed off OR open enough to fit a mop?

I sitting here filled with guilt since in like 17 years I've only clean under the stove and fridge like four times. Gross right?Yeah, but I need help to move them. This is bad planning. I have been set up to fail and feel gross.

@futurebird I think cat toys, being knocked underneath, start to form a natural barrier to keep dirt out.

@futurebird These spaces aren't mostly that bad. Most of it will be dust (that is human skin and hair). Just hope there haven't been any oil leaks from the stove - those are the hardest to clean, but the most effective way is to use those stove detergents. Let it soak for 30mins and everything will come off.

@futurebird The stove doesn't bother me as much as the fridge. Its coils are underneath and require thin vacuum attachments and a patient, steady hand to clean without bending fins. Since there's a big fan at the far end, it is designed to pull dirt through to clog the coils and make it less efficient. Or they expect a much more rigorous cleaning of the surrounding area than we signed up for.

@futurebird in the ideal world, i would have actual movable refrigerator risers instead of the makeshift planks my fridge is on.

@delcj Do any of these design people think about these things? Like at all?I bet most people have a gross "crumb and soon to be sentient dust bunny" zone under there. You can clean a few inches in with a mop, and use a broom to get the cats toys out... but it's gross.

@futurebird Shortly after moving into a flat, I had reason to pull the fridge out and found a whisky bottle behind it. It was empty, fortunately, since I wouldn't have dared drink it, but it would still have seemed a waste to discard it.

@futurebird I think the normal approach is to look at this not as “dirt” (anthropocentric, judgy), but instead as a vibrant ecosystem (objective, appreciative)

@futurebird My guess would be that installing cabinets/countertops is expensive, and not all fridges are the exact same size. There must be room for variation.People also usally want maximal cabinet space, so we end up in this weird space.I think the answer is to custom-fit a frame around the fridge to prevent the stuff from getting back there. Though need to be mindful that the fridge also needs to vent out all of its waste heat.

@futurebird I clean under a fridge only when I'm moving elsewhere. 😁 In German we have a word for these cuddly cute well-rounded textile/hairy stuff you often find behind furniture, especially sofas: Wollmäuse = dust bunnies (in German mice). They are social creatures, need not much food. An artist has a dust archive: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsches_Staubarchiv He has political dust as well as culinary dusts. So, why design if you can have art? 🤭 😎

@futurebird I've considered actually putting something around the bottom. As far as I know that opening has no purpose for the stove operations. It's not like, say, a refrigerator where there needs to be airflow I don't think. I'm pretty sure it's just so they can be height adjustable to match any set of counters.I'd just put a line of duct tape at the bottom, but you might want something better looking.

@NatureMC @elduvelle We don't 'kill' the wollmäuse! How could you suggest such a horrible thing. I am going to "re-home" each and every wollmäuse. We have a nice farm, it's in upstate New York, and there is a big barn there filled with beds and stoves and many wonderful places for the little wollmäusen to frolic and play.
