Have you ever written longer documents, such as essays, short stories or novels on your phone? Likewise, have you ever composed music that way?

@futurebird I have indeed, and not because I wanted to, but sometimes you have something you need to get out, to write down, and it can be now or never. So yep, some of the things I have written that I like the most were hacked out on my phone logged in to my wordpress site!

@futurebird I used to write novels on my handspring visor and a foldable keyboard back in the day.

@futurebird too many distractions on the phone, and I need a full size keyboard so my hands can keep up with my brain

@futurebird No. I greatly prefer typing on my desktop. I have a nice mechanical keyboard. In fact, I often bookmark Fedi posts on my phone, if I want to type a longer reply to one, or use it for reference in a blog post.

@futurebird I find working on my phone helps me over that blank page writer's block where you're just looking at a blank page and nothing seems like enough to write down.

@futurebird longest thing I've written on my phone is an email of moderate length, and even that is super annoying.

@futurebird I recently gave mobile a try and was somewhat alarmed that I could at least write a reasonable long-form draft on my phone.

@futurebird no because using a phone for anything more important than a text, very brief email, or a toot, is misery

@futurebird yes, starting with Palm devices in the mid-90s, which was greatly enhanced by connectivity through Novatel Mobidem Sleds and OmniSky, switching to iPhones in late 2007. Even that early, meetings with Palm engineering convinced me they were, unfortunately, doomed

@futurebird I'm *very* curious how many people *read* longer documents on their phones. And more to the point, since most people use phones only for anything they access online, what length of document/article is "too long" for most people to read on a phone? It *feels* like phone only people are probably cut off from long-form content and from complex content because they simply won't read or engage with such things.Too cumbersome, too hard, too awkward, too small of a screen.

@stevenaleach I read the entire Game of Thrones series on my phone. I read entire novels often.

@futurebird Interesting. I can't imagine doing that.My brother sends me links to articles by text. I copy the url and email it to myself and then go to my computer to read it.And I don't know how many times I've emailed co-workers, family, and others and gotten a response: "Ha Ha, I ain't gonna read all that...".For an email that if printed would probably be four or five pages of text. That disappoints me and scares the hell out of me.And I don't think that ever happened pre-mobile.

@futurebird Not on my phone, but I wrote a few book chapters and dozens of articles on my Nokia 770 with a ThinkOutside folding keyboard.I ran vim in a full-screen xterm. It was great for two reasons:Not really powerful enough to run two things at once, so no distractions. Each device fitted in an inside jacket pocket, so I could stroll down to a cafe by the sea and work from there.

@futurebird back in the day, i had a Palm PDA and a Bluetooth keyboard, and I'm reasonably sure some of the (multipart) SMS messages i wrote back then qualify as long form work.

@futurebird I'm the opposite: I read and type most of my cell phone SMS messages on my regular computer. My computer and cell phone are integrated with each other.
