I have a teenage daughter so via social osmosis I have far more knowledge of #KPop than I shouldI also hear stories of abusive, toxic fans and management in the K-Pop #music machineIt's alarmingSo this is good to see:"Former Teen Top member #BangMinsu, better known by his stage name C.A.P, has been appointed head of the preparatory committee for #Korea’s first-ever idol #labor #union- a move that could reshape how the K-pop industry addresses #artists’ #rights"https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/entertainment/others/20251108/k-pop-idols-to-form-koreas-first-labor-union-could-launch-by-end-of-year

@benroyce That is good news. Artists of all kinds are notoriously easy prey. We want so badly to create that we overlook some pretty obvious pitfalls.

@Pineywoozlelately the abuse by #trolls is fucking insaneexample:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finger_pinching_conspiracy_theory"men's rights" "activists" become outraged by #4chan style manufactured bullshit on #socialMediatrolls comb through video and photos to find a woman #kpop idol who, while simply moving their hands, it sort-of seems she is making this gesture:🤏(denoting a small penis)of course, this is never the idol's intentionit's for feeding the insecurities of toxic assholes who think they "own" the idol

@benroyce @Pineywoozle I wish people raised their boys better instead of leaving them at the mercy for these incels.

@CStamp @Pineywoozle it used to be more isolatedbut, as part of the story with bigotry in all its forms and social media, it has metastasized into a potent toxic stew of creepy abusive entitled shitbagsthey enjoy itthey get off on itpower and control

@benroyce At the beginning of internet, a concern was that it would allow pedophiles to normalize themselves, as instead of being isolated and knowing they were abnormal, now they would find community and justify their behaviour. Social media is allowing the conspiracy theorists, incels, etc. to find their communities, which makes those things a bigger problem. The dark side of the web, though in plain site. :( @Pineywoozle

@benroyce The positive side of the internet has been for marginalized communities finally having a voice: Indigenous folk, gay/trans, Black, etc. That is a genie we don't want to put into the bottle. I really wish schools were more involved in teaching kids about the internet and how to be aware of taking care of themselves and protecting themselves from being exploited by people with agendas that aren't in their best interests. @Pineywoozle

@CStamp @Pineywoozle we need social media with *strong* moderationit's why we're both here on mastodonnot saying mastodon doesn't have problems, but people have to admit the kind of straight up vicious bigotry that is legion elsewhere, and accepted, and promoted, is severely tampered here

@benroyce @CStamp @Pineywoozle Depends on the server. When I first joined Maston, a lot of the servers were full, so I just chose an instance at random. Turned out to be a Nazi server. 2nd was one that forbade any ,mention of or criticism of racism in the name of antiracism. This is my 3rd and it is fine, but quality of moderation varies widely.

@GarLipow @CStamp @Pineywoozle "forbade any ,mention of or criticism of racism in the name of antiracism"wtf?and yes, there is a lot of shitty servers out there. there is however a mastodon ethos for the large main servers that holds, mostly

@benroyce @CStamp @Pineywoozle But the problem was, the shitty servers were on the list I got when I first migrated to Mastodon. And I'm pretty sure it was the main list everybody got at the time. There needs to be, at the very least, a strongly vetted list of servers for new people migrating to Mastodon.

(1/2)@GarLipow > There needs to be, at the very least, a strongly vetted list of servers for new people migrating to MastodonThis is about as strongly vetted as it gets;https://joinmastodon.org/serversMost of the other sites that map the fediverse include every service they can. Which makes them a useful reference work for fediverse nerds, but not a great recommendation tool for newbies.@benroyce @CStamp @Pineywoozle

(2/2)Any attempt to curate a newbies list of fediverse services comes with a range of challenges. Particularly what criteria are used to guide which ones are in and which are out, and how to keep it up-to-date.As I've said a few times, I think the problem is the norm of people joining random services online that we know nothing about. I want to see more local services (ideally neighborhood scale), and community groups running online services for their members.
