On RNZ right now, they're talking about how the software used by pharmacists is not even remotely fit for purpose. Imagine that. Why isn't that sort of thing being sorted by an openly licensed (available to all) system developed by a consortium of companies - that can be scrutinised by anyone - because it's too important to be entrusted to the proprietary gain of any one company. This stuff is a no-brainer. Some things are far too important to be dependent on a profit motive.

@merileedkarr we need better people making technology decisions in the public sector. (the corporate sector is already a lost cause) All the evidence available suggests the ones doing it now are utterly incapable of making informed decisions. The lack of capable leadership is epidemic.

@ptoothfish yes. Absolutely. As a first step: everyone who's made the decision to 'buy Microsoft' should be fired. That would put paid to the old saw ("no one ever got fired for buying Microsoft') - because they all should've been.

@lightweight Patient Management Systems for GP surgeries is another area of concern. There are multiple systems provided by private companies, and they all use different proprietary data formats and only talk to external systems when the provider decides it's in their interest.

@leighelse yes, absolutely. Having those sorts of systems provided by proprietary vendors, each with a local monopoly (see Pegasus Health) leads to a) crap software, b) huge amounts of sensitive data held by dubiously competent vendors, and c) massive incentives for the vendors to do the wrong thing.

@leighelse they should be publicly funded systems, written by NZers in Aotearoa, and of course, public funds -> public code.

@leighelse @lightweight Getting a contract for medical data processing is like a lottery win I guess. They are given everything from name, date-of birth, address etc to physical and mental state of health. What a goldmine to sell.If this does not get heavily regulated in a hurry - game is over.

@Martin_NZ @leighelse yup. It's cavalier to the point of gross negligence.
