"Interior Design" is like 80 percent cleaning and organization is what I'm learning. Only 20 percent is the more fun and interesting bit about "style" and color pallets. The "design experts" do know things worth learning even if their advice can sound alien. The best advice I've learned is:* open shelving can look messy, it's good to put things away sometimes* think about how much furniture you have, in small spaces you may have too much. But also this is hard! Hard but worth it.

A lot of design advice sounds alien and just ... not for me or most people I know, but buried in there are some useful tips. And I really do need ... guidance.

I'm working on making major changes to my apartment. I'm just tired of it always looking the same and it feels cramped and too stuff with items. I was very depressed by this process at first. It seemed impossible. Then I started thinking about what furniture I could get rid of. We are getting rid of:* a couch (we have two)* a bed (we have two)* a bunch of stuff we don't useJust removing these items has made a huge difference. If feels like a whole new space.

@futurebird " think about how much furniture you have, in small spaces you may have too much." You only have too much furniture when there isn’t room on the floor to store more books (or you can not find the Cat due to the number of hiding places)

@futurebird Very true. I would prefer 1 less love seat in the house but my son insists on keeping the ratty one in his room. I would have preferred to move one of the better ones there and I think I will need it when I move.I've been cleaning up the house and removing cat stuff and the house feels much more open.I remember for years fighting over getting rid of a bed that dominated a room with my wife. She insisted we needed it if her parents stayed over. Happened twice over 15 years.

@futurebird Being surrounded by a lot of stuff makes me anxious, so my interior design style is minimalist.

@venitamathias I’m the same! ☺️ However instead of being minimalist, I just go with the always being anxious. 😬

@futurebird This is what happens if you don't move every 10-15 years.

@futurebird Open shelves are for homes that need to look like sets, or where you don't actually live. Like an vacation rental.
