Anyone knows why WebSerial does not work under #opensuse #tumbleweed? :opensuse:#linux #meshtastic

@selea do you get a specific error? what browser are you trying it with? it could be related to apparmor perhaps but without more details I can't tell for sure

@selea it worked for me two weeks ago on TW Slowroll, but only under Chromium, not using the Firefox plugin. So it is at least possible for it to work! Check permissions? Not sure what all you'd need, but dialout group at a minimum.

@anthropy The browser can see the device, but "can't open" it.Apparmor is not active either

@selea stupid question: have you tried to disable the firewall to check if it's interfering in any way?

@selea hmm, unsure, but you could try adding your user to the dialout (or alike) group to make sure you can open serial devices, that is a common issue. You could also try open the serial device from a terminal to test what's going on, if you get an error without using sudo then likely something like being added to the dialout group might help

@selea the only thought left is a file read permission. Something like the user needs to be added to the USB or SERIAL readwrite group. Normally I would suggest "run it with sudo" to do a quick test, but I would not do that for a browser...Does serial work from a terminal with a simpler client?

@portaloffreedom Serial works from other applications, just not the browser :(I added myself to the "dialout" group (as @anthropy suggested, and now it just times out - atleast another error! :D

@selea @portaloffreedom did you log out / log in after adding yourself to the group? the group membership won't be active for your specific user session until you do, that might have to do with it

@selea @portaloffreedom ahh, fiddlesticks.hmm, puzzling! have you tried with other devices by any chance? I'm kind of tempted to spin up a opensuse VM just to see if I can reproduce it

@selea @portaloffreedom Oh I mean like, different serial device. Perhaps the way it does its handshake confuses the browser. But let me try spin up a VM ..
