@r45tkmcxmx @fujoshi To rms? It's simple, they killed his PDP-10, made him unable to fix broken printer drivers, and scattered his former compatriots from the MIT AI Lab among several commercial ventures, one of which literally and figuratively glowed in the dark. In those circumstances, I see no surprise at all why he turned out the way he did. Relatedly, if you want the best overall insight into rms and don't mind reading long transcripts of lectures, his 1986 speech at KTH tells of just about everything that happened (from his perspective) and contains much detail which is otherwise lost or not accounted for in his later speeches. https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/stallman-kth.en.html

@r45tkmcxmx @fujoshi fair lol. all I'm gonna say is you stare the devil (MIT) in the eyes, it's bound to stare back and you're not gonna like what you see. something inherently faustian about that institution (it's not for nothing that epstein came from there)

@r45tkmcxmx @fujoshi tbh that's the real tragedy with mit, stuff *does* happen there, there *is* some kind of legitimacy behind the institution, but it all gets hijacked and redirected in the name of the demons, so it's all for naught

@allison @fujoshi i honestly agree. I like that I can use Arch Linux though, it feels like it works well enough for me and is understandable/tinkerable for when I need that. I do find intrigue in FreeBSD, but I need my laptop to do all I wanna do (gaming, music production, ai stuff) so I can't use it, not yet at least. Plus i don't think gnome is well supported there and well, I use bluetooth too.

@allison @fujoshi lol yeah i tell that to everyone. Hell I have worms of my own: I don't like flatpaks, so that kills most distros for me. Now, I don't want a system I can't understand and use easily, so I won't use nixOS (where it also has dubious package quality). I'll probably stay with Arch for the foreseeable future. I see myself probably going the Apple route, but I am enough of a nerd that I find Linux fun when it works fine. Plus, I do gaming and thus will eventually get a gaming laptop. But well, I feel comfortable currently on my system and that's cool.

@allison @fujoshi and currently the only worm I have with Arch is: optional dependencies. I want stuff to have all its features working, I don't want to someday have something not work right because I don't have something installed, so I painstakingly install every single optional dependency I see, unless I recognize it as something pointless for my laptop. This can be automatically done on other distros, but not here. Thought of doing my own alpm/pacman thing to make it work automatically but I haven't worked towards that.

@cine @fujoshi @mischievoustomato the actual hardware is nothing special (basically just a microcoded stack machine) and the software you can run using vlm, even on x86_64 or arm (by various means official and less-than-official), the bigger problem is that genera is perpetually stuck in the early 90s -and- has hobbyist-unfriendly ip owners who are intimately connected with the deepest reaches of the us intelligence apparatus. lmi's ip (which has no such encumberances) was freed a while ago, as was xerox's efforts (by way of venue, whose estate was acquired and comprehensively freed a few years ago). the bigger problem, imho, is that there is no new research or progress being made on attacking the kinds of problems the lisp machines did, so they just get assigned a mythic status while everything else languishes and gets left behind (I shouldn't quite say "no" research or progress, but the efforts are scattershot enough that nobody is able to form a coherent response out of them)

@allison @fujoshi @mischievoustomato I knew about symbolics glowing stuff, so basically not gonna happen. Also that lisp machines are essentially frozen in time. It's a shame, but oh well. I'll keep writing my infra in CL, much to the chagrin of whoever I hire to maintain it in the future :cirnobaka:

@allison @fujoshi @r45tkmcxmx @mischievoustomato mhm, one more thing not to do if I ever have kids :apunotes: I got introduced to linux much later (11 yo), but that was young enough still.

@cine @fujoshi @mischievoustomato my broader point is that the symbolics stuff doesn't really matter all that much, it's just one local maximum. https://tumbleweed.nu/lm-3/ and https://interlisp.org/ are far more consquential as objects of study and any potential revival will have to be greenfield regardless of the ip status the symbolics stuff has (you can also see a similar dynamic in the smalltalk world where the foss revival is basically entirely carried on squeak and derivatives thereof thanks to alan kay pulling some strings within apple in the late 90s to put their smalltalk-80 v1 license to good use in arbitrarily sublicensing (freeing) what existed within apple up to that point)

@allison @fujoshi @mischievoustomato Right! I've been meaning to play with interlisp (didn't remember about its xerox origin), but I have my computer autism on hold as I progress in my electronics autism. Didn't know about the lmi one, though.Based Alan Kay. I got the small talk 80 blue book just for kicks. I'll get to reading it... soon, I hope.
