"Deserve"Is one of the most contentious and political words in the English language. When I hear this word used without comment, when it's slipped into an argument in a way meant to feel natural I want to stop the whole conversation.From justice to sustenance the question of what people deserve cuts right to the heart of how we see other people. It can't be left unexamined. What do you mean by "deserve" ?

@futurebird to me, the first dimension of variance has "everyone deserves healthcare" at one end, and "billionaires deserve to be mulched" at the other end. The other dimensions of the word "deserve" are too complicated to explain in this comment.

@futurebird I am an atheist, but when I think of 'deserve,' I think about what a karmatic universe would do based on the actions of that person/group.A person who preaches about how school shooting victims are acceptable externalities for the second amendment *deserves* to be one of those externalities.A person who helps feed and clothe the poor deserves to never go hungry or cold again.A group that spreads love should be lovedA group that spreads hate deserves to be hated

@futurebird It's definitely a Trojan Horse word - they want to smuggle a whole pile of presumptions in underneath it.You know that concept from "total quality control", where absolutely anyone working on an assembly line who sees a serious problem can pull a cord that brings it to a stop, and you don't resume it until the problem is dealt with? That's my mental image of what you describe.

@futurebird I avoid the word 'deserve' entirely. Every bite we eat is stolen from another living thing, and every breath we take was made by a plant. Just by being animals our karma is way over-extended.
