Bank unveils green loans plan to unlock trillions for #ClimateFinance "An innovative plan to use public money to back renewable energy loans in the developing world could liberate cash from the private sector for urgently needed climate finance. The plan, which is being pioneered by the IADB, would involve getting taxpayer-funded development banks to buy existing loans to green projects in poor countries, which would [attract] investment from private sector lenders."https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2025/jun/16/public-money-green-loans-climate-finance

Reframing "debt":"To confront this crisis together, we need resources. And we must recognise that the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities remains the foundation of any climate pact. The global south demands greater access to resources – not out of charity, but justice. Rich countries have benefited the most from the carbon-based economy. They must now rise to their responsibilities, not only by making commitments but by honouring their debts."https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/nov/06/brazil-cop-30-truth-world-leaders-climate-crisis-president-lula

Could the US, despite its absence, still scotch #COP30? "Some governments are particularly nervous after the Trump administration intervened to sink a deal last month at the International Maritime Organization that would have resulted in a world-first carbon fee on shipping. One of the European officials said their priority would be for countries to rally together to present a united COP30 front against any anti-climate interventions from the U.S."https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/cop/diplomats-worry-absent-us-could-still-seek-influence-cop30-climate-summit-2025-11-07/

Just the other day I was telling CelloDad how I would love to put some of my 401(k) retirement money into clean energy in developing countries. His immediate reaction was that it's almost impossible for an individual like me to vet the companies. But if that vetting is done by a reliable entity like a development bank then more people would be willing to invest in regions against which the prejudices are stacked high.https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2025/jun/16/public-money-green-loans-climate-finance

"After three decades of annual conferences, global emissions are still rising – and critics say the process is failing. But that misses the point. Emissions are rising much more slowly now than they would have been without the UN regime. In 2009, the world faced up to 6°C of warming. Before the Paris agreement in 2015, the “business as usual” forecast was down to around 4°C. Today, the UN projects that without additional policies, the world will warm by around 2.5°C"https://theconversation.com/the-un-climate-summits-are-working-just-not-in-the-way-their-critics-think-268953

"Private adaptation finance undisputedly has a role in providing the upfront finance for major adaptation investments. And while there is scope to increase current adaptation funding, it is not enough.More international public climate finance is required to increase grants and highly concessional finance for particularly vulnerable countries, and to play a smaller but catalytic role in other developing countries."Grants.Concessional finance.NOT profit-making loans.https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/businessreview/2025/11/10/how-much-can-business-contribute-to-financing-climate-resilience/

Are climate talks and climate policy failing? In short: No."In instance after instance, sober realists have been proved wrong, while the wildest hopes of campaigners have been exceeded. The problem is not that we fail to hit the objectives we set for ourselves. It’s that the drumbeat of bad-faith nihilism encourages us to forget the progress we’ve already made, and lower our ambitions for the future."https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2025-11-13/how-the-world-is-quietly-winning-on-climate

"The evidence of nearly three decades of climate diplomacy is that when we set ourselves an objective, more often than not we will hit it. Consider the European Union’s first pledge under the 2015 Paris Agreement to cut emissions in 2030 to 40% below levels in 1990.Plenty scoffed at the time.In fact, greenhouse pollution last year was already 37% below 1990, and on current trends the EU may achieve a 54% cut, almost enough to hit a stricter target passed in 2020."https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2025-11-13/how-the-world-is-quietly-winning-on-climate
