looking at thingiverse, people sure are eager to 3d print things that shouldn't be 3d printed(a mouth guard?!)

FDM printing with PLA has the problems that it's inherently not a good material to have near your body (it will partially melt and leak nasty chemicals at you) but also it's completely un-sterilizable. There's all kinda of little tiny voids that will fill up with bacteria.also, your hot end might be leaving lead in the print.

@foone "do not 3d print items for inside the human body; items for inside the human body require special care" is one of those things that probably needs to be added to school curricula nowadays.

so my understanding is that if you want to make something human-safe with 3d printing, you either need to fully coat it (for things like jewelry) or you need to print a mold and cast some body-safe silicone instead

so you probably REALLY SHOULD NOT try to print something that goes in your body with it.

@dysfun my understanding is that while other types of filament are better, they still can run into the lead issue with the hot ends

@spycrab I know some people do complicated mold things where, like, they make a mold out of the 3d print, then make a second mold out of that, to avoid these problems. that way you can sand down the pre-mold to make it safer

@puppygirlhornypost2 look I've had a porn star ask me about 3d printing sex toys, I'm not being naive here. I still think the worst place you could put a 3D print is in your mouth

@puppygirlhornypost2 yeah when I was looking into making sex toys with it, the advice was to make a print, sandpaper it or use a plastic dissolving spray, then make a mold out of that, then use that mold to cast silicone

@pixx yeah my understanding is that the plasticizers in PLA are the problem, and other filament types use the same or similar plasticizers for the most part

@foone @pixx PET, PC, and somewhat ABS (almost any printer can do PET, higher end ones can do PC and ABS) don't have that issue, they're (chemically) food safe though they still have the issue with voids (though you can use food grade sealants and ABS can be sealed/smoothed with acetone) so for most things they're not useful beyond a single use, but the prints are still useful as a model to make a silicon mold

@raptor85 @pixx I should look into those. I've got some 3d printed stuff that I'd be holding from time to time, and I'd rather not be worrying about PLA poisoning me the whole time. (I don't have much experience printing non-PLA, so I've stuck to it for most stuff)

@StompyRobot I don't do any SLA, but my understanding is that that CAN be made food-safe, but it's not inherently food-safe. ie, some resins are safe and some aren't.

@foone yup. There's also ceramic deposit print mechanisms that you bake (think porcelain) and can glaze, but obviously too brittle for a mouth guard.

@foone @pixx some people even recycle PET bottles into filament to re-use! it's a bit harder to print successfully than PLA (if you have an older printer especially, most newer ones tune themselves automatically). Some of the other materials give considerably more...toxic fumes than PLA when printing as well so make sure you vent, especially with ABS. (most printers "made" for materials like ABS are enclosed and have carbon air filters)

@foone@puppygirlhornypost2I've seen people fill the mold with beeswax, drain it, and have a smooth wax surface on the inside. Sounds like less effort
