@spacehobo Yeah, but my point is that you can use that installer to install a normal install on a cheap USB drive. The cool thing about Knoppix was that you could try out Linux on your hardware without having to first commit to a full install - either wiping out your hard drive or fiddling with a dual boot install. But with large fast cheap USB thumbdrives, that's no longer a problem. At least, with Linux. Linux can install to a USB drive the same as an internal drive. Not sure about BSD.

@spacehobo And with Linux, at least, a generic install will work on almost any hardware (with the same CPU architecture). So I do a normal install of Debian Stable onto a USB thumbdrive, and I can use that on almost any computer.I don't know how BSD does things, well enough to know if you can just do a normal install on a USB thumbdrive and then use that on any computer.

@isaackuo loosely speaking, NomadBSD comes closest to the ideal of a single installation of FreeBSD that does not require manual reconfiguration to work with diverse hardware. <https://nomadbsd.org/>#FreeBSD #NomadBSD @spacehobo

@spacehobo Point is ... the developers/maintainers don't need to worry about a LiveCD version when a normal install covers the use case of a LiveCD well enough.

@grahamperrin @isaackuo @spacehobo … and it is a very well executed project. Have it on a ssd drive and often use it. Very portable across machines. The concept that made knoppix so great at this time. (I still have a real respect for knoppix and the idea of a “run-everywhere” system)

@EnigmaRotor @grahamperrin @isaackuo @spacehobo is NomadBSD still active? Last release was based on FreeBSD 14.1-RELEASE-p2.

@isaackuo@spacey.space @spacehobo@teh.entar.netOMG, Knoppix was such a groundbreaking thing for the time! Not quite as jaw-dropping as that QNX system that had a GUI and even a web browser you could use with a dial-up PPP connection and it all fit on a single floppy, but still 😁
