I'm finally using zero Google apps on my grapheneOS phone. Maps was the last holdout, half inertia half function -- but Google maps quality slowly deteriorates, and CoMaps incrementally improved, so there you go. Oh wait, I have Home in use for some security cameras. None of them point at the street, do not good for surveillance, only pointing at carefully chosen transition locations, inside driveway gate. Can't find a better solution. One thing at a time. Play Store in use, sandboxed by grapheneOS. The only notifications it gets are incoming texts, signal, phone. My phone works for me. Lol I think.

@tomjenningsI have the google stuff in a separate user profile. Literally Nothing google about 99.7% of the time.For Maps I use Organic Maps

@tomjennings Do you know, what would be the comaps equivalent for a non phone / desktop / web browser device? I'm currently switching Google->Kagi but the Kagi maps are just pretty bad.

@dlakelan If it appears that somehow I am up to date on things, believe me, it is illusion. I do remember reading, on the fedi, that organic had done some stupid thing or other. And I was having trouble making it what I needed it to do. They're all weak on search. Comaps (and the others) will get you to the block. Thats enough. Just today, I navigated an unfamiliar route to a familiar place with comaps, downtown LA. By ebike, using shokz bone conduction headphones. The verbosity is barely adequate. A mumbled "right" when what is needed is slower and longer annunciation of the word plus the redundancy of street name, "right onto BeauFord" But it works, like it might have 15 years ago. But it works and is not corporate code. And it's improveable, doesn't track me or serve ads.

@tomjenningsYou can adjust the speech engine to speak slower and choose a different voice... I'm using Sherpa TTS and a voice model called en_US-amy-medium
