@tomjennings @designthinkingcomic Most everything on Linux can read WebP. The only apps I know of that can't are Inkscape and LibreOffice, and I'm not even sure about Inkscape (an Inkscape dev told me it is supported, so there must be something amiss with my distro's build).

@argv_minus_one @tomjennings @designthinkingcomic It has a config option for how to open images, it's just a command with a placeholder.If that fails it defers to... I'm not sure what, maybe xdg, which always picks the worst possible option for any given file type.

@designthinkingcomic It's just a new image format. I'm not defending it's use or design. As a mere end user it's a mild pain to have one more format to think about. I would imagine at this time all web browsers can display it, fwiw. It's been around for 15 years. "Better compression" seems the reason. I usually have little sympathy for this because storage cost today is nil. Through I hate googles corps with all my heart and want them to die painfully and soon, as tech weenies, one trillion files times a couple percent is a lot of storage to not buy or maintain etc. So it makes sense and I still hate it. But holding my breath hasn't made it go away so I just found some tools etc. I expect never to make one ever but I do have some saved to display.
