"A sharp increase in e-waste has accompanied the surge in electronic equipment. In 2022, 62 million tons of e-waste was produced globally. Canada’s e-waste tripled between 2000 and 2019 and is expected to reach 1.2 billion kilograms by 2030. These statistics demonstrate an urgent environmental crisis that demands new ways of thinking and educating future generations."https://theconversation.com/to-tackle-e-waste-teach-kids-to-be-responsible-consumers-265712

@gerrymcgovern Problem is manufacturers ENCOURAGE throw-away so they can sell you a new one. They charge as much as a replacement to repair something and they often won't sell parts, schematics, or other service information. They serialize parts so if you try to use a 3rd parties part, your device won't recognize it. It's a racket and the bastards that promote it should be tarred and feathered and the tar set ablaze. Some things are worth a little CO2 release.

@gerrymcgovern WRONG this is a problem you can't "consume" your way out of = educating kids is pretending you're doing something while allowing the waste to continueBig Tech profits from forcing all of us into purchases we would not need to make if nuisance upgrades weren't crawling up the *** of your devices making them insecure and un-usableex: cheap PC bought in 2007 lasted 10+ yrs, its replacement lasted ~ a yr before windows updates totaled itphones / phone apps same, same

@peachfront @gerrymcgovern I have at home a dell from 2005 dual core Athlon still chugging along on Linux, and my other machine is home built from components i7-9700k.
