@stux this poll crashes the mastodon client XD> not enough.though I also have learned from my grandma and my great grandparents (to some degree).... but I know I will never have the entire picture in this particular topic, far too much time has passed between then and now for me to access reliable sources about what actually happened and not just tales about tales about what might have happened.

@stux We studied both wars, and the political world in between. It has lead me to believe that it was pretty much one long (political) war that continued on through the cold war and probably afterwards. There may have been breaks, and changing of sides, but nothing much has really changed.

@stux I think so, but it is a little bit difficult to distinguish what I was taught at school and what I've heard from my grandparents, whom all four had their stories. Not the most pleasant ones.

@stux I'll also add my maternal granddad was a surgeon during WW1.. after the war he gave up being a surgeon for being a doctor with.."I've seen enough blood and guts to last a few lifetimes" Paternal GD was infantry in Africa and a great uncle died.My dad flew Hurricans and then Typhoons, even mentioned in a "typhoon book" while my mum was a nurse..So I got a lot more than skool taught me, although none wanted to talk too much about the horrors of war.

@stux In Poland we now have 2 levels of schools, a bit earlier we had 3 levels (6years, 3years, 3years) and each of them was starting at prehistory, some Iraqi stuff, then Egypt, Greece, Rome... and as far as we can reach until school ends, and that for three times but with deeper topics, more about politics, details... So often we dont reach WW2 or just go thru it as fast as we can so we can barely touch cold war and what happened in Poland after WW2 aka Socialism, all local events that provided way for Solidarity and 1990 So WW1 was better described. Also a lot of stuff was going on in WW1 on our territory and has a deep base in our XVIII and our "great and lovely owners" in XIX century. And this whole shit from both 1914-1920 and post WW2 politics makes base for todays politics.

@stux Yes. After covering the Industrial Revolution 3 times (!) I finally got to GCSE Modern World History. We covered WWI, WWII, the Great Depression and the rise of fascism in depth. We also covered the transatlantic slave trade, a little bit of the US civil rights movement, and the end of Empire in India.Lots stuck with me but especially the realisation that it was everyday people in a democracy. I've been wary ever since.

@stux mostly WW2, and thanks to a strongly encouraged teacher who still had active memories on the last war years as a child, we also learned a lot about the time in between the wars and the rise of fascism, although this was not encouraged by the curriculum. As I'm German, it was strongly focused on German politics.

@stux In high school (mid-to-late '90s), we had American Studies I (discovery -> pre-US Civil War)American Studies II (US Civil War -> Clinton admin)World History (Mesopotamia -> present)Each semester was 18 weeks; 1.5 hours each class, 5x a week. The World History lessons of WWI and WWII were like 3 weeks. The American Studies II lessons for WWI & II were ~2 weeks. When I took HIST220 in college, I learned more about WWII than had ever been taught in all of my K-12 education. I had thought to take a course on WWI, but never got around to it.Growing up an < 1 hr from DC and 30 minutes from Antietam and Gettysburg, you really get the sense of American-focus.

@stux here in Australia we did in fact learn about ww1, ww2, the various russian leaders and movements and other influences of the time. I am old enough to have watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. I think it's more important to note that we were taught critical thinking. Something that seems to be lacking these days.
