AUR packaging is a fucking meme. You package something kinda important, a day later a TU comes by, packages it wrongly in the main repos and some user with no packages on a power trip comes by and submits a deletion request, because the package already exists in main repos. No prior communication from anyone.

@phnt had the same issue with postgresql17, perfect package to migrate inbetween releases, but a mailing list janny who does nothing but file these requests to farm points removed it, when it's very clear that it does a very different thing from the official packaging and can even live besides it!https://aur.archlinux.org/pkgbase/postgresql16

@i They sadly unbanned him, but MarsSeed is a bane of any AUR packager and I had many negative experiences with him. He got triggered at some point with nosystemd packages in the AUR and filed deletion requests on a bunch of them to the point that Artix guys got mad at him. https://lists.archlinux.org/archives/list/aur-requests@lists.archlinux.org/thread/3VDVPC7CPM2XUWMNVRSM5DX6TZNTSRTO/

@slopsec I'm not interested in being a community that's now best known for banning users who have different opinions than a bunch of powerjannies that would ban me if they ever found this fedi account. If anything, I'm more inclined to go to Gentoo, which has it's own different brainworms. Or just switch to BSDs where I can modify my ports tree in peace.nixos-moderation-team-coup-purge-time.jpeg

@slopsec Getting involved in NixOS would mean learning a braindamaged "Haskell at home" language and packaging a bunch of stuff I use in nixpkgs while hating nix for existing. I don't think that's a good choice.traditional-linux-distros-switch-nix-package-manager.jpg

@SuperDicq @slopsec That has GNU brainworms that I refuse to deal with. And I hate the idea of an IaC and/or immutable distros anyway. I'm not changing a while to install a package.

@phnt@fluffytail.org @slopsec@miruku.cafe You can also install package imperatively simply using guix install <package>. You don't have to do everything declarative if you don't want to.

@phnt@fluffytail.org @slopsec@miruku.cafe You can also install guix as a userspace package manager on any other existing distro. It's a great alternative to use when a package you want isn't available in your distro's official repo, much better than Flatpak or Snap at least.

Take the Gentoo pill if you want BSD but linux, just maintain your own portage overlay and package whatever the fuck you want in it, chuck it on some git repo and other users will be able to use it on their installations tooits like the BSD ports tree but more support for custom reposCC: @slopsec@miruku.cafe

@phnt @slopsec post-LLM, none of these garbage not-quite-a-programming-language configuration DSLs make sense any more. Pick something standard like Lua, give it the globals you want, and call it a day. CPU and time restrictions are easier and more robust than any Turing completeness gets you. No configuration language is ever easier for a non-programmer to deal with than AI + a real programming language would be. The tooling in particular is always absolutely abysmal, it's shocking people tolerated this shit even before LLMs destroyed an entire pillar of justification for it.

@rose @slopsec I'm very close to doing just that. Time is the only factor as I don't have much left of it right now. I'm not a fan of how portage does certain things, but it's better for what I'm currently doing. The only negative thing I can say about Gentoo maintainers really is this: https://bugs.gentoo.org/953258They were too quick to jump ship on Qt5 support in my opinion.

@SuperDicq @slopsec >It's a great alternative to use when a package you want isn't available in your distro's official repo, much better than Flatpak or Snap at least. No reason to do so when I can whip up a PKGBUILD or ebuild for it in five minutes. Or you know, just throw it into /usr/local.

@apropos @slopsec I'm fairly certain that LLMs would completely fall over with Nix as a language because the documentation basically does not exist and what exists is incorrect.

This is why people generally recommend that you don't use LLMs for troubleshooting Nix issues. Then you have to either deal with the aforementioned power jannies in Matrix or hang out with the cooler kids in the Discord.@phnt@fluffytail.org @apropos@fsebugoutzone.org

@phnt @slopsec LLMs hallucinate like mad with anything even a little obscure. This adds a practical cost to pointless NIH languages. All you need in place of any configuration language is a program in a general programming language that produces a data structure equivalent to the configuration. This tiny step makes all the normal tooling work that makes "blah AS CODE" even worth doing.
