I wonder how hard it would be to build; a basic steam engine, then use it to turn a turbine or dynamo, then use it to run my SteamBoxsteam all the way down.

@foone I sometimes think about how if part of robotics competitions was charging the robots with a stationary bicycle we might get more respect as a proper sport.

@futurebird @foone It's a very fine line, the one between cycling to charge the pizza-making robot's battery and just biking to the pizzeria with a $50.

@futurebird A robot that rides a bicycle, to power other robots? Sounds feasible, all I need is a power outlet!@foone

@foone If you've got a turbine, you don't need a steam engine. You simply use steam to turn the turbine which turns a dynamo which generates electricity. Which is how coal power plants (really any plant that harvests heat energy from something) do it. So, to answer your question, just ensure that you don't get any of your SteamBox's power from a non-steam-powered source like solar, wind, or hydro, and you're already doing this, no building of steam engines required. If you really wanted to get into the weeds, you could view electricity as being merely a fairly efficient mechanism for transmitting steam from a place of abundance to a place where its power is needed. Ergo, steam is transformed into electricity by a turbine-dynamo, then turned back into "steam" by your Box.And if you wanted to make things extremely complicated, there's no reason the computational mechanism which makes your SteamBox operate needs to be run on electricity at all. Steam-powered computers are theoretically possible. So build yourself one, have it run an emulator, and you'd be running Steam with steam.Sorry.

@foone stirling engines are very simple and can use steam…
