Do you have a TV in your home? That is a large screen on a shelf, table or wall for watching videos and movies not a computer monitor. (A screen with a keyboard in front of it that you sit at is not a "TV")

@futurebird I have multiple televisions, but do not subscribe to any services. They're mostly for watching things like DVDs.I do have a media center connected, but it's an old, repurposed Mac Mini. Not sure if that qualifies as "computer" or not.

@futurebird When I left home to go to university, living in a dorm was transformative: there was a TV but on a separate room and felt like going to the cinema. Out of casual access and everyday activities like lunch and dinner, TV disappeared from my life. Never returned. So much time in my hands ever since. I cannot fathom how I could have committed so much to that box in my childhood.

@futurebird Don't have one since we moved 15 years ago. First it was put off because we needed so many stuff bought. Then we got a second computer. Tablets. Streaming services. Completely forgot about the tv. Still nobody believes we don't have one and if they do, they think it's because we can't afford one (it WAS the the reason the first two or so years, yes)...

@futurebird having recently moved in with new housemates, I now live in a house with two huge (well, huge by the standards of those of us who grew up before cheap large flatscreens) screens that were clearly intended to be TVs, but they seem to get only about 1-2 hours of on time a day, and 80% of that is console videogames, judging from the sound (I'm not usually in the same room.) And they both have multiple attached keyboards, but said keyboards don't get much use.

@futurebirdMildly surprised 'I have a TV but don't want one' isn't there as a sort of control.I mean, I'm already imagining the commenters telling you it's a stupid option because people could get rid of their TV, and your defense of "you're not forced to click it, stop being an Internet idiot" (only more nicely).Hold up./me looks at selfCrap. 🄓

@futurebird We have a small (14"?) black-and-white CRT TV that a friend gave us back in the 90s, after he was appalled to learn that we didn't have a TV. I watched a lot of good shows on it: Twin Peaks, ST:TNG, etc. And we kept up with the news. These days, the TV has been sitting on a high shelf gathering dust for a couple of decades.

@futurebirdJust to add a bit of variety in from all the "I have one but I never use it" replies: I fricking LOVE my tv!! I can learn about places I'll probably never be well enough to visit, watch plays and ballets and musicals that will never be staged where I live, and when I'm feeling horrible, I can watch my comfort shows over and over to help calm my nervous system or distract me. I'm so grateful for my TV.

@futurebird we've got a pretty big TV my wife got for free from someone she knew who was upgrading, and then also a Chromecast we got for free from my work as a gift thing. The Chromecast is an enabler, it enables watching so much stuff, so easily. Even free things on say Pluto or Tubi in addition to YouTube.I don't think we could get rid of it at this point, even if I wanted to I don't think my wife would. It is useful to put stuff on while doing knitting though.

@futurebird Up until a 2024 it was setup for NTSC/ATSC 1.0 - at its peak (when I was using an external antenna in the attic) I could access up to 70 channels, but there were repeats (SD/HD) so the real number was between 45-50). Then channels started to go away, though I was already watching less TV.I still have an internal antenna but with ATSC 1.0 being killed there's not much point anymore.

@futurebird we have a TV because the neighbors bought a new one and left the old one in the basement. We asked if we could take it and they said yes. It is not connected to cable or satellite or such. It is connected to a computer and keyboard and we watch things in the internet mediathek of German public television... so football /soccer games and documentaries. We do not use it for surfing the web or similar. It is bigger than our monitors.

@futurebird technically yes, but it's a small old one that doesn't work very well and it's in the basement. We only keep it because it works with our ancient Wii.For our regularly used "TV," we switched to a large monitor years ago that's hooked up to a computer tower.

@futurebird "(A screen with a keyboard in front of it that you sit at is not a "TV")"Ummm... beg to differ - we have more than TV which is very definitely a TV (sits across from the sofa, has tuning and channels and is used for watching live TV, as well as streaming the TV's on-demand services) yet is also used for playing media from the desktop server and has a laptop behind it with a remote keyboard and mouse on the coffee table - which is then used for playing games, surfing the web and... yes... streaming stuff including TV on demand.Conversely, the monitor and speakers at the desktop server are also used if we're sitting at the dining table and... want to watch TV.So TVs are monitors are TVs these days.

@futurebird Heh. My office TV is actually a smart monitor that's not connected to my computer at all. It came with its own remote and everything (including built-in media streaming—turning it on sends me directly to the last "live" channel I was on, it also has a hub for switching to different streaming services). It's a little slow and sometimes janky but it was way cheaper and easier to fit in a small space than an "actual" TV!(we also have an "actual" TV so my yes answer works there too ^^)

@sewblue @futurebird Probably because the poll uses check boxes, which allow multiple choices, instead of radio buttons, which allow only one answer. Begs the question as to how you might come to pick more than one, but we are talking about people (shakes head mournfully) here.

@sbourne @sewblue Every time I write a poll on here I do my best to make options comprehensive and considerate enough that no one will complain that I didn’t make an option for them. Since we have only four options allowed and since I’m not perfect I always fail.

@futurebird I voted no, then remembered I have a pi running mythfrontend connected to the tv. There is an older hdhomerun on my network with an antenna connected. And, my primary input is an AppleTV… which has the channels app installed. So, technically I can use the channels app to tune the hdhomerun and watch live tv.But, I don’t do live… which is what the mythtv is for. It uses the hdhomerun to record broadcast tv. I would normally watch something I recorded… or something I stream.

@futurebird I don't have a TV and I don't want one, which implies no cable/satellite connection. Over 30 years ago, I sold/gave away all devices because I couldn't stand all the dishonest/smug advertising anymore. Not to mention that the selection of movies/series/documentaries was/is determined by small-town nutcases; and I have to be there at a certain time on a certain day to watch? No, thank you! I have books, audio-/movie-DVDs, and I decide what/when/where I enjoy them. My freedom šŸ’– ā˜˜ļø

Also, my monitor is a larger TV than the TV we use as a TV :)

@futurebird A movie buddy is appalled that I'm out here watching classics of world cinema on a laptop, but I really don't want a TV. I don't want a screen I can't put away when I'm not using it. Having a large screen in a small apartment feels like...bad feng shui, I guess. It distorts how a person experiences the space.

@futurebird When I moved in to my house a few years ago it was the first time I'd owned a TV (because I had a place big enough to have one and not just watch stuff on the computer). We don't really get OTA stuff here (in a weird valley) and so I use it exclusively for Plex, listening to music (I'm a no-Spotify person) and sometimes just looking at Astronomy Photo of the Day.

@futurebird I *did* have an HDMI monitor that *technically* was a TV for a couple years. It worked like a normal monitor, but had a "mode" or "input" button that included a tuner/channel select mode. And it had a coax connector. So I guess I have owned a TV in the past couple decades, but only technically.I've also been a "cable" customer in the past -- because I had cable internet and thus had to accept a basic cable plan for internet (but never connected a TV to it or used it thus).
