Our 16 year old KitchenAid espresso (which we bought second hand!) might have had its last failure. The main gasket has failed and I broke some other bits trying to fix it.So I'm shopping for a new machine! I'm learning about E61 group heads and my word it's tantalising. The King is dead! Long live the King!

@evcricket I have not regretted getting a Rancilio Silvia for my 40th birthday. The most complex electronics in it is a thermostat.

@jpm @evcricket Similar story, but with a Lelit. There are a bunch of Australian resellers who sell all the parts for Rancilio/Lelit/etc machines, and they're quite basic construction inside (rather than Breville/etc which are all complex and fiddly injection moulded plastic and harder to source parts.)I bought my Lelit used eight years ago from someone who got upgrade-itis and went E61. I do sometimes think about doing the same, but the Lelit is a tank and makes good coffee.

@projectgus @jpm @evcricket I have regretted getting a Gaggia. I got it because of its simple construction, but that didn’t save it. As it turns out they fucked up bad and made the boiler a battery by mating a stainless steel part to an Aluminium part, and the thing just corrodes itself to death within a few years.

@jaseg @projectgus @evcricket ooooooof. Miss Silvia is all brass plumbing inside, pretty sure the boiler is too.

@jpm @projectgus @evcricket apparently they now have brass boilers in newer models (but still mates to a stainless steel grou0 head). The replacement part is even compatible, but IIRC it’s more than 150€ so I’m highly hesitant to get one. At that price you start getting decent used machines for home use.
