Some loosely collected thoughts on ext-zones (thread):1. I'll start by saying I'm not personally a fan of the protocol. I think the potential for abuse is pretty high (in this case, abuse means using the protocol for more than the "intended" purpose).

       2. I've noticed a lot of "this has been discussed ad-nauseum before" in the argumentation by proponents of the protocol. Oftentimes when I see valid concerns brought up, the initial response is "I don't think that would be the case" or "I don't think that will happen", and then when it's brought up again, the "ad-nauseum" response is used.Saying "I don't think that would be the case" is not a great response, and it's okay to ask the same question again given that response.

       3. I do enjoy watching Brodie's content, but I think he got the reporting wrong on this one. The pitch seemed to be that a vast majority of stakeholders are pro-zones, and only a few holdouts (GNOME in particular) were holding it back.He only barely mentioned that Xaver, a member of KWin, is pretty staunchly against the protocol as it stands today. I think a lot of groups understand the problem is important to solve, but don't think zones is the answer.

@ryanabx I will disagree on this point, I feel like a large part of the video was focused on Xaver's issues with the protocol. To me it was clear I was saying there was wide disagreement with the protocol but maybe I could have made that more clear.

       4. I can say all this while also greatly respecting the work that matk has done on the issue, and recognizing that the issues are valid.I'm also of the mindset that with every new platform, you're expected to work with the constraints given to you. We should absolutely be providing a wayland-native API for initial positioning of windows, for example. I believe this is most likely to be the solution for 90% of ext-zones' use case. The remaining bit can be solved in other ways.

       5. I work for a company that deals with embedded linux displays, and the common automotive solution for window placement is Weston with ivi-shell (https://wayland.pages.freedesktop.org/weston/toc/ivi-shell.html)This allows you to control window positions for applications, and applications themselves can tap into ivi-shell to control their own.We don't need ext-zones in order to control windows in the automotive space. This is a non-issue, unless you want to use a desktop compositor in the automotive space.

       6. Another thing I should acknowledge is that I don't use any MDI applications or otherwise multi-window applications that claim they need this protocol in order to function on wayland. As a result, I'm inherently biased towards wanting to control my own windows 100% of the time. That's something to take into account, as everyone has their own lean based on how they use their desktop.I do think we can find a use-case based solution rather than a blanket everything-protocol.

@BrodieOnLinux I’m glad you mentioned the thread at all, because I feel like the thread did a good job of highlighting what the issues are, but I don’t feel like the video took counter arguments to zones seriously, and were just seen as “obstruction”. I feel like given the comments I’ve read that’s the takeaway people had despite the intentions of the video. It’s hard being a creator and managing what the video is meant to convey and what actually gets conveyed.
