What brought this to mind is that the group that picks up compost from our house operates in a manner that - well, let me put it this way: we know the name of the person who handles dispatch. She responds to us personally when we request new bags. She just emailed us personally to test out why some automatic mail wasn't working. Sometimes when we forget to take our bin the 20 feet out to the curb, the drivers will just, come get it from where they know it isThis is a municipal service, it's a waste service, but we legitimately love it.

@ricci This is basically how I live my life. Between making music, my local LUG, my local Makerspace and several rather niche sports clubs, the Days are Just Packed.

@ricci this is how we got involved with the nonprofit! Our local CSA is the kind of place where the owners know everyone and they just pack the bags based on everyone’s food requirements and they know all the farmers who just show up and bring the produce. And I was in the store talking to the owner and she mentioned a long time ago that she wanted to do a nonprofit and now it’s happening!

@ricci this is why I got involved in my union, it wasn't perfect but it was a small, accessible, defined social unit. Community is stressful in its own right but it sure beats that alternative. And I'm constantly blown away by how few options there are for this type of community in the suburbs in the US.
