Why do Americans call pension savings "401k"? Is it a tax thing?

@lichelordgodfrey That makes sense, since the stock market usually appreciates in value over a decades long period, or at very least declines less than fiat currency does with even low inflation.I was wondering about why it is called by a number and letter instead of just being referred to as "pension".

@lichelordgodfrey Fiat currency can do the same, if the government/central bank wishes to do so, as has happened historically.

@Jens_Rasmussen yeah but then you can't blame nebulous "market forces" but the government and it's easier for people to be angry and focus that rage on something.
