Today, I am taking students to Monticello, the Thomas Jefferson Plantation near Charlottesville, VA. Pretty sure he had some thoughts on what to do in situations like this one. Meanwhile, we will take the Slavery at Monticello tour, to consider the “paradox of liberty” and what truth-telling contributes to justice. #uspol #democracy

What a day. Can’t overstate the importance of the work being done at Monticello to recalibrate the site and unpack the lives of the 607 enslaved people who lived, worked, and died there to make Jefferson’s life of learning, leisure, and service possible.Despite a system that denied and violently suppressed their humanity, we can imagine the richness of their lives and hear their voices at this site. The Hemings family and many others.
