I guess I'm right at the cusp betseen <5 and many. I don't always know the ones I know *perfectly*. As a general rule, I don't remember what I had for dinner last night. There are maybe 3 that I know word for word exactly, and a few more I know much of, tho maybe not all.

Back in the day, I knew a modest number of Russians. They almost uniformly could quote Pushkin to me. I don't think Americans ever had that kind of culture.My father, whose higher education was high school, loved Fitzgerald's Khayaam, and, in his cups, would quote random quatrains to me.

I don't believe I've ever been required by school to memorize a poem. I could be wrong about that, but I don't remember having to do that.The poems I know by heart are poems I know *from* my heart.
