RE: https://mastodon.online/@streetartutopia/115515243919539799Old cities like London still hold ancient secrets. It's a bit far fetched, but not impossible, that there is a whole room sealed away somewhere under the city-- a time capsule from another era. The same vitality that causes cities like this to rapidly erase their past can also cause accidents of preservation.

Doing a quote on here feels surreal. Sadly I can't quote most posts ... I wonder if my old posts are locked like that... is there a way to unlock them?#quoteboost #quotepost

@futurebird Maybe even someplace like here, San Francisco, which burned down a few times in the nineteenth century then again in 1906, after an earthquake turned everything topsy-turvy. A part of town was once a cove where wooden ships abandoned by their crews for the Gold Rush burned and sank and were filled over and built atop, and now and then excavations find their way into these old ships.

@futurebird Mexico City is full of this. The historical city center overlaps with the footprint of Tenochtitlan from when most of the modern city's area was underwater. Work on an electrical substation ended up uncovering things from 800 years ago! https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/construction-workers-uncover-massive-800-year-old-aztec-dwelling-mexico-city-180980079/

@futurebird Someone did a neat project visualizing Tenochtitlan vs. the city today: https://tenochtitlan.thomaskole.nl/ -- there's also a 3D viewer at https://retratodetenochtitlan.mx/

@futurebird Last one in this rant--there was a survey in 2021 in which a (slim) majority favored renaming the city to México-Tenochtitlan, an idea I love (though, of course, it's none of my business) just to rub in younger capitals' faces just how much history the city has 😂 https://www.elfinanciero.com.mx/encuestas/2021/03/30/le-cambiamos-el-nombre-a-la-cdmx-el-54-de-los-capitalinos-quiere-que-se-llame-mexico-tenochtitlan/

@futurebird It depends on what version of the Mastodon software the accounts' instances are using. You can only quote if both instances are using 4.5 (I am glossing over the complexities introduced by GoToSocial/Akkoma)

@futurebird In other words nobody could quote your posts until sauropods.win upgraded to 4.5, but now that it's on 4.5 you are instantly "unlocked" (unless you went in your settings and intentionally locked the account from quote perms again)

@futurebird @mcc If I got this right, we can't quote other people's posts from before they opted in, and this setting was introduced in Mastodon 4.4:https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/09/introducing-quote-posts/

@futurebird locked is the default, so, I don't think old posts can be quoted.

@futurebird I was surprised by the announcement of the "new" quoting feature. AFAIK, it was already possible. At least in the @moshidon client I use, it is. I quoted the post you referred to just by including its URL. When I post it, it appears as a quote. (Now quoting myself…)https://mastodon.social/@sloanlance/115515785204839182

@futurebird I think once you allow quote toots for your account all toots inherit the permission, but i might be wrong

@futurebird Reminds me of the Roman baths under King's College London where I was a grad student. I told lots of people how amazing it was. And then with the advent of the Internet I learnt they weren't Roman at all.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Baths,_Strand_Lane?wprov=sfti1#Georgian_cold_bath
