I've been refraining from using the win11 onscreen keyboard in these recent days, even though I really really could use it. But it was mostly just knowing that no matter how exactly microsoft messed it up, I was gonna have a lot of Opinions on it, and that path can only lead inexorably towards me writing my own OSD software

again. I wrote the OSD for the JPC-RR emulator, because the previous one was written in java by a Very Engineer Brained person and didn't really understand UX. So I rewrote it to load layouts from a file, so we could design something that looked more like a keyboard

mainly speed. the JPC-RR emulator is the slowest emulator I've ever used. I has to abandon a tool assisted speedrun of Duke Nukem 1 episode 2 because I needed to do a big re-route and couldn't handle how long and slow that would be, plus it was so punishing on my system's overtaxed cooling that if I ran it for more than a couple hours a day my computer might start crashing

it's normal to have negative feelings associated with software you haven't used in 15 years, right?

@foone Emulator I get. Recording emulator seems to be what it says on the tin. What's a re-recording emulator? I can't find any 30 second descriptions on the internet.

@plaidtron3000 It's more making speedruns:you can rewind time and replay segments to perfect them, since you can try them over and over until you get them right, or program what keys are pressed on what frames.

@foone It records system state or instruction stream and allows you to script inputs then?

@plaidtron3000 yeah. it's fundamentally an input script, the output file from this is just a list of "on frame @5347592, press the A button. on frame@897592, release the right trigger" events.
