Business idea: A camera, and data serving company that guarantees that photos taken with its cameras, served from its servers have undergone zero processing or enhancement.

@futurebird Isn't that what RAW files are for?

@ben Talk about backfiring. Also currently images are used in court that have no metadata, it depends on chain of custody I thought.

@stilescrisis Is it only possible for a camera to generate that kind of file? I thought they could be faked.

@futurebird @ben I'm guessing there is a potential use for digital signature and/or some kind of block chain directly on the device to ensure provenance (including image+GPS data+timestamp). Some kind of "stamped" camera for journalists.

@gdupont @ben I suspect that like most digital trust systems it still comes down to the chain of custody. Currently what makes a photo "real" is that someone says that they took it and they are hopefully trustworthy. The idea of this company would be to sell it to businesses that want to show they have an extra layer of trust. Real estate, court evidence, ID photos things like that.

@futurebird Faked in what way? It's an image file so you could technically have any image in there. But the intent of RAW files is that they capture what the camera sensor sees with as little postprocessing as possible. This means you have to manually do things like fix the white balance, but if you want minimal postprocessing, that's what you get.

@futurebird RAW files are that, and IIRC both Nikon and Canon have the ability to sign files with a private key baked into the camera to prove providence.

@futurebird making guarantees is the hard part. You may want to look into C2PA for a standard that tries to do that.

@futurebird I've been thinking about just a public registry of cryptographic signatures of hashes for files - so any unmodified copy of the file will have the same hash and point to the record of who registered it when. It's not proof that the picture/document is "real"/human created, but it's a way that human content creators could easily register *I made this* and perhaps voluntarily record additional info like geo-location, precise capture time, etc.
