i had something like this happen back on lab in 2023 but it was when an account on an instance following a huge chunk of relays replied to me and the server briefly threw 500s, it lasted like 5 seconds though and might've just been a bunch of instances fetching pinned posts from kirby@lab.nyanide.com and/or instance keysRT: https://crib.social/objects/bffce1ad-0d4b-4636-bacb-b70ccde494dc

@kirby The issue is that nobody thought that the fediverse would grow so large. And that post is also a good example of why tons of single users instances, aren't a solution on fedi either. The network simply can't handle it due to it's inherent nature.

@PurpCat @kirby At least Pleroma doesn't cry itself to sleep when a random instance goes down...

@phnt @kirby This seems like a bug in implementations, not a bug in the idea of the fediverse though, right? Single-user instances is the ideal I think the fediverse needs to aim for, so these kinds of bugs are especially important to fix.

@taoeffect @phnt you can't stop instances from fetching keys, actors, you can stop fetching pinned posts but they're pinned and people would hate it if others didn't see the pinned posts. mastadan media fetching problem that pleb aka i declin dot eu mentioned is already a huge problem but i doubt elephant man will stop caching remote media for whatever reason

@taoeffect @phnt pretty sure pleroma doesn't also overzealously fetch an entire thread, i think it's bad practice to do so actually

@kirby @phnt I don't need to fetch someone's pinned posts unless I'm looking at their profile. If I'm reading a reply thread their pinned posts are totally irrelevant. So, not sure what that traffic was fetching, but whatever it was, was probably unnecessary.

@kirby @taoeffect I mean larger Pleroma instances are also using MediaProxy, I'm using MediaProxy proxy and spent hours debugging issues with it. The problem is that at the current size federation works fine, but the moment you start to go big, it stops scaling well. Imagine if I had a account and 3 thousand people follow me from all different instances. That's 3 thousand requests my server has to make just to fulfil follow relationships. That's basically what those large Mastodon relays are, but at a slightly lower scale (about half) iirc. And instead of push federation, it's mostly pull. I don't think that these large relays were a good idea. I like them for fetching posts from instances I share interests with, but whose gonna read your post from the thousands of users you sent to post to with no actual relationship with them. Even Nostr won't scale much better than ActivityPub, since that's all effectively all single user instances with less overhead.

@kirby @taoeffect Pleroma walks the thread until a post has no parent that it can fetch. Not ideal since thread views differ across instances. Mastodon does the whole replies Collection along with GTS. Not a bad idea really, but it should have been done so that it can be fetched once and receives all the posts, without sending requests one by one.

@phnt @taoeffect :p: "ActivityPub is a spam protocol." basically the best summary of AP and most federated protocols out there anyway. in the future we will be sending gigabytes of data from computers manufactured in the late 90s and constantly have 500s

@phnt @kirby When you post to your 3k followers in that example, it's just 3k HTTP POSTs you have to make, right? What's hard about that?

@taoeffect @phnt the approach you take with it, server response times will vary. not to mention bandwidth limits if most of the accounts you follow are actively replying to people

@taoeffect @kirby Time, bandwidth and most importantly CPU usage needed to establish TLS connections to 3000 different hosts. Currently it takes 2-3 seconds to flush the outgoing federation queue on this instance. That's with <400 follows most of which are on probably <50 instances. It's more complicated than that, but that's the gist.

@phnt @kirby Seems OK. So your message isn't seen instantly by all your followers, no big deal. Also a different scenario than when someone else replies to you... Anyway, hopefully these optimizations will be made. The fastest, least resource intensive, and most feature-full implementation will get lots of users.
