@dallo> Paramount Has Blocklist for Stars Deemed Pro-PalestiniansCan we all acknowledge that Cancel Culture is a real problem now? Or am I doomed to being condemned as a RWNJ for merely suggesting it.@weyoun6

@strypeyCancel culture is just a fancy name for boycott. Boycott is great. Assert you values.@weyoun6

@dallo @strypey @weyoun6 as a person who got cancelled twice with relatively little power, cancel culture can be incredibly horrific. Boycotts don't come with death threats, doxing, or destroying someone's personal ability to make a living.

@quinn @strypey @weyoun6 I am not into death threats but doxing and destroying someone's personal ability to make a living seems to work against fascistsNazi group “decimated” by coordinated republican anti-fascist campaign https://www.thecanary.co/global/world-analysis/2025/11/04/nazi-group-decimated/

@dallo @strypey @weyoun6 ok, but you do see how that is violent, and a lot more than a boycott, right? That it reproduces the carceral state? I'm not going to say it's inherently good or bad in any case, context matters, but destroying lives is destroying lives.

I learned long ago that dehumanizing others and denying their belonging in humankind and their human rights is what the most horrific ideologies in recorded history have done. it's hard for me to not observe that cancel cults behave just like that. when will we learn? 😞CC: @dallo@pouet.chapril.org @strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz @weyoun6@kolektiva.social

@quinnComparing that to the carceral state is a big nope. Did you went to prison to do so? Boycott is core part of cancel culture. The most passive part. What you are talking about is more related to harassement, isn't it?We must ostracized, called out and stop bigotry or it will kill us like it already does in a large part of the world.@strypey @weyoun6

@dallo> Boycott is core part of cancel cultureThese are two totally different things. Boycotts, like BDS or fossil fuel divestment, target *businesses*. Cancel culture targets *individuals*.> We must ostracized, called out and stop bigotry or it will kill us like it already does in a large part of the worldNo doubt this is the excuse Paramount would use to justify trying to destroy the livelihood of actors who support Palestinian human rights. Do you buy this excuse?@quinn @weyoun6

@dallo @strypey @weyoun6 going after people instead of institutions is morally suspect, but more importantly it's mostly useless. Punishing people is carceral logic writ small, mass action (including boycotts) require solidarity and most of all care and compassion. When we lose that, we lose it all, And that's the world we're in now.

@dallo @strypey @weyoun6 by the time Hitler was in post he was an institutions, and I think you could say the same for Trump. But attacking the personal qualities of powerful evil men... It's kind of a waste of your time. Attacking their power and access is key, but also a collective action problem. Go volunteer for a food bank, organize a protest, find someone working the problem and help. Slagging off people is Trump's thing and you're never going to be as good at it as Trump is.

@dallo> Imagine saying this to a union rep...Unions, like boycotts, target *businesses* or other institutions. They don't call for dogpiles on individuals. Reference; I know lots of people who are employed as union organisers, and I've been on union rallies and picket lines since I was a child. BTW If you communicated in whole sentences, instead of snarky quips, it would be a lot easier to believe you're taking this discussion seriously.@quinn @weyoun6

@dallo> Including applying the social contract of tolerance to exclude and target bigotryThis is doublethink. Cancel culture is bigotry, in the form of organised intolerance. But you can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into. So I suspect @quinn are wasting out time trying to reason with you about this.@weyoun6
