@alice I don't understand why any server runs open registrations. The answer oh but we're a really big instance and we have lots of moderators to remove them... 🤔But if you have enough moderators (you think) to manage them, why on earth don't you moderate *beforehand* Unless that's a lie, you don't have enough moderators and your *only* priority is to "get bigger"

@ivor @alice because it's the default mode and they don't care about it and tutorials don't mention it

@alice my general view is decentralized networks without algorithms do not have the Nazi bar problem, but that's only true if unwanted tagging is prohibited. like the web plus email, we can all be left to browse wherever we want and won't know the horrible stuff even exists if the servers properly deal with spam.but as you're pointing out here, anybody leaving the door open to assholes (servers are mostly portals to the shared fedi) can make the whole place a shitty place most won't visit.

@shalien @alice He might've used it, but I did some digging and even the professionals can't trace the origin. Most likely some clergyman from a hundred years ago, borrowing off two philosophers.

@alice @mxjaygrant to me, the focus should be on unwanted tagging. this might be harsh but perhaps there could be a preliminary period for new accounts where replies they make appear to show up immediately to themselves but actually must be approved by an admin before others see them. IDK
